In the season opener for both teams, the Baylor Bears (0-0) will head south down I-35 to take on the Texas State Bobcats (0-0) on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. CT.

Quote of the week...

Dave Aranda: “We've been awfully focused on the process of just really forming an identity and really focusing on simple things that we can control and we can really own and take really strong ownership of. And I think when you ask that question, I think it's a great one, what comes to mind is penalties, or lack thereof, or ball security, or managing the clock, or winning the line of scrimmage. And so those are things from the very beginning we've really focused and honed in on, and I'm excited about the opportunity to go out and do those things. And I feel really confident that offensively and defensively there's a real strong belief that our effort, our execution, our edge can fill in the blanks in terms of the expectations and so I think the focus on what we can can control, good things are gonna come.”

Craig Smoak’s Players to Watch

Texas State — Quarterback Brady McBride

McBride doesn't blow you away with his ability, but he is seasoned in Spavital's offense at this point and ended last year on a solid three-game run statistically. Outside of the RB group and a player I will mention later, the rest of the Bobcats offense is a walking transfer portal.

I don't worry about Baylor's defense in the slightest, but you don't want an experienced QB to get a hot hand and some confidence in front of the home crowd. If Baylor's offense struggles to score points like it did last season, it only takes a couple of throws, busted coverages, or turnovers to make things a little too uncomfortable.

Baylor — Quarterback Gerry Bohanon

Bohanon put the work in to earn the job and displayed the confidence of a starting QB when talking to the media on Tuesday. Standing only feet away, you could sense his excitement level for this weekend. It's his time now.

Was interested in how the offense did tonight.

Not impressed. Trouble holding on to the ball and don't see the QB stretching the field.

Our D played well most of the game but I expected them to dominate since this was supposed to be the strength of our team but that didn't really happen especially on a couple of drives and our Offense has a lot of work to do. I love the ground game but when you have 2 picks on defense (plus a pick 6) and only 20 points to show for it against TX state that's a pretty poor showing in my opinion. I'm hoping we were just really conservative with play calling so our coaches can see who on the o-line will be the ones that start going forward. I hated seeing Our defensive players run into the end zone celebrating after the INT. I was hoping our coaches would find a WR that would create mismatches and be a steady target but it seems we still have work there as well. I'm thinking/hoping this is our Rice game from 2019.

That about sums it up. Way, way too many mistakes late in the game. Should've been a more comfortable win, but being boneheaded kept it close to end it.

Offense looked decent when it wanted to. But one gets the feeling that it was kept very vanilla. The dominate run game was nice to see though.

4:57 to go UTSA gets a TD. 37-27 over the Illini.

"dominate run game"? We talkn bout Texas State. Any average "P5" tram would have hung at least 50 on that TxSt team tonight. "Mistakes" and "bonehead" was not the issue nor why it was close. Its going to be another long season. 3 wins most likely the high water mark...with 2 wins a distinct possibility based on what we saw tonight.

The major alarms bells coming out of this weak win are: 1) the offense, again; and 2) lack of discipline.

Appreciate your Baylor wishfulness though..........

This is tantamount to Baylor beating USC at the Coliseum. If you took Illinois, change your underwear lol.

Is it really an offense keeping it "vanilla" when the offense actually is "vanilla"?

For a first game, yes it looked like they were keeping it pretty safe and vanilla.

Yeah, it's an upset, but Illinois is not good.

Good enough to beat the Children of the Corn last week.

Montana gets first and goal but can't put it in the end zone. Kick a FG.

Montana 13
Washington 7

3 minutes left in the game

Final outta Champaign

UTSA 37
Illini 30

San Antonio goes nuts and that Illini coach should be fired out of a howitzer

Montana over U Dub
UTSA over Illinois
ETSU destroys Vandy
Charlotte (didn't even have a team 6 years ago) over Duke

Tulane recovered their on side kick against OU and had a chance to drive for a winning touchdown at the end of the game.

So agree. It got ugly today, but I am not going to apologize too much for a win.

A real P5 6-6 team would've beaten Northern Iowa by a gazillion points!!!!

No Matter what they're projected to be, ISU Almost always looks like crap in their first game. They'll probably get a lot better as the season goes on.

Yeah, imagine ISU with a "B12 2nd" team QB and the best RB in the conference, plus a 1st team TE and only scoring 16 on NOrthern Iowa. Corn State barley better than Directional Corn State. Sad.
