Let's talk about Blake Shapen

Three things that struck me about Shapen Bake tonight:

1. He showed a first-reaction desire to stay inside the pocket. I think most young QBs, let alone those getting their first start in the middle of a physical road conference game as freshmen, default to pressure release. Escape, evade, then decide. Watch Shapen's first couple snaps especially. On a couple he's literally standing the pocket going through reads. He did his scrambling, but it was comforting to see him not default to hair-on-fire scrambles. Which honestly I saw more of from Caleb Williams.

2. Holy hell he's fast. Gerry's bigger and so his strides probably make his straight-line speed look a bit slower, but Shapen gets from A-to-B like a bullet. I knew he was a dual threat guy, but mon dieu. Bro chews yards.

3. Arm strength. Lots of it. He fluttered a couple throws early probably out of nerves, but if you go back and watch his progression, he's just winging in balls on 15 and 20-yard ropes after a while. He wasn't getting a ton of chunk plays because Grimes rightly wanted to keep his routes to shorter trees, but when he did get a window you could see there wasn't a throw he couldn't make.

Gerry earned his spot and will get it back once he's healthy, but Shapen, man, that's a dude. If we roll with him for the Tech game I'm still feeling pretty good about the W with our run-heavy system and the way our D is rolling. Hopefully he trusts the staff enough to stick it through next year.

To jump in on the road against one of the toughest Big12 defenses with Big12 berth on the line, I was impressed.

Grimes has been quoted many times saying Shapen is a good QB for his system. That doesn't mean Gerry isn't also. Just a compliment that he's said about Shapen.

I'm wasn't as impressive as Stidhams debut in Manhattan..but it was a good outing.

To be fair, Stidham also knew he was starting all week and practiced with the 1st team all week as such. Shapen was pulled off the sideline in the middle of the game after the starter went out with an injury.

Defenses were blowing up plays on both sides and creating a lot of chaos. I was encouraged to see him stay focused not get rattled. The K-State QB's didn't fare nearly as well.

True. But Stidham had an entire week to prepare & had played in every previous game, sometimes meaningful minutes. (Props to DD) Sharpen had a halftime to prepare & I don't think he's played any since September. That's a very big difference & makes Shapen's performance that much more impressive.

Gotta love QBs with a baseball background. Natural, quick, seemingly effortless throwing motion no amount of QB camps can teach.

Baller. I won't repeat everything you said, but one thing I will add is that I loved his pocket presence and his ability to slightly shift around and then make a play.

It looked like Brewer out there but with an arm. Almost Baker Mayfield.

It's a shame Gerry went down when and how he did. I thought he was playing really well tonight before the injury. But Shapen looked really good when his opportunity came. He played with a lot of poise and confidence and made some nice plays to extend drives.

It would appear we're pretty well set at the quarterback position for the time being.

Just an aside, it's insane how much Shapen looks like Charlie Brewer in a uniform. He's got a stronger arm, but he looked just like pre-2020 Charlie Brewer in virtually every other regard.

QB1 is good
QB2 is also good and a freshman.
That's why QB3 transferred.

I think there's a reason the Baylor staff didn't scramble when the QB decommitted a couple months ago. I'm sure they'd take another good one, but they might not feel it's a critical position if need for the next couple years.
Clearly they will need more depth soon, but one year may be ok.

He looks more like Shawn Bell but it's a good argument to have.
No many thought Grimes would have him passing so much on his first drive, let alone the entire game
I'm not so certain GB gets his spot back when he's healthy. Shap showed he can sit in the pocket. Make the deep ball pass with zip and make more effective runs out of the pocket.

There have been many backup quarterbacks that look good in their first game that come back to earth quickly when a DC gets tape on him. Shapen has a very tough task in Tech next week because they'll get a full week to prepare for a different type of passer than Gerry. It will be extra challenging because Tech will have insider information from McGuire on how to best handle the Baylor offense.

I fully expect next weeks offensive performance to be ugly. Baylor may still win, but there will be a lot of frustrations

Maybe, but there is little Shapen did that wasn't already in our scheme. Only thing he gave away is that he is willing to sit in the pocket, he's pretty fast once he's decided to run, and he tried to force a few throws that could have been picks.

I liked the look of him. I hope Gerry gets healthy soon, but Shapen might be a great quarterback for us in the future.

It does say something that even with the lead, Shapen had 50% more pass attempts than GB. Both QBs each played a half.

Haven't watch high school football in a long time, but growing up in East Texas, Evangel Christian out of Louisiana was a well known powerhouse. If things are the same, I'm sure Shapen had good coaching in High school.

I was thinking the same. It's an indication of each quarterback's strengths.

He did seem to have good composure for his first big test. Was worried at first, but think coaches will have him ready for Tech.

Don't disrespect Shapen like that. He is a better athlete than CB ever could dream of.

How long ago was it - 2 years perhaps, when this thread was titled Gerry Bohannon? Of course he was only in one drive but it was a potent one.

BS played great but lets keep in mind no TDs were scored. Red zone was his achilles. Was a beautiful thing to see him get downfield but he didnt need to run people over right then. Play smart brother! We may need you for several more games!

I think it says we couldn't run effectively into the teeth of the Kansas State defense, and we were only up by a touchdown on a couple of occasions, so we needed to try aggressively to score.

Let's calm down just a little bit.

Gerry had us on pace for 17 points (at least) in the first half, while Shapen led a single field goal drive in the second.

Shapen played well, especially given the circumstances, and would appear to have a bright future in this offense. But Gerry is the starter when he gets back.

Shapen did look good in relief but let's tap the breaks.

Many on here were claiming Chandler Morris was Johnny Football with a moral compass after the TCU game.

I thought Shapen did one helluva job in relief for us. Is composed and can throw darts. But let's be real here: our DEFENSE won this game for us, without question!!!

Every QB in our now Zeno-less QB room can do damage with their legs:
  • Straight-line speed: GB > KD & CR > BS
  • Quick twitch & hips: BS & CR > GB > KD

All four fit Grimes' system, and all can play. This is a big factor as to both why Bell & Grimes now probably don't sign a '22 QB now and why Pyron decommitted.

Shapen benefitted from KSU having zero tape on him. Same thing happened with Zeno vs OU in the CCG.
Same thing also happened with Morris vs us this year.

He's was good yesterday and you can see his calmness regarding having to make quick decisions that comes from being the top SS prospect in Louisiana for baseball. But let's chill a bit on the comparisons to other good Baylor QBs.
JXL
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He was exactly what you want in a backup QB - cool and calm, able to step right in, and capable of passing such that the defense couldn't sell out to the run.
