Baylor has landed commit No. 2 on the day as Daingerfield High School 2023 cornerback Jakevian Rodgers‍ gave his pledge to the Bears. He is the second commit from Daingerfield today as his teammate Aeryn Hampton‍ committed earlier in the day. Rodgers is the third commit in the 2023 class.

“Keep it in the family,” he said. “But seriously I love the whole coaching staff and I think they can make me an better athlete and person this not a 4 year decision this is a 40 year one.”

When Rodgers says “keep it in the family” he means it as he is cousins with former Baylor All-American and current New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims.

Rodgers attended the Big 12 Championship game against Oklahoma State and came away very impressed by the Bears performance.

“That was an amazing thing to witness in person,” he said. “The defense I like how they didn’t give up when the adversity was against them on the goal line that shows a lot of courage that’s a program I want to be in.

It was a team effort to land the versatile prospect as he was offered by Eric Mateos over the phone but got to know Kevin Curtis and Dave Aranda as well.

“I trust Coach Curtis and Coach Aranda - they have put the right people in place to win the big games,” he said.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect plays both wide receiver and cornerback at Daingerfield as he helped lead the Tigers to an 11-3 record. Baylor is recruiting him as a cornerback at this time.

Appears this kid has a good head on his shoulders.

2023 Commit means a the kid's a Junior. 18 months until he is on campus if he does not enroll in the spring semester. 18 months is an eternity for a 17 year old. I'm not saying we won't see him, this post is not about him in particular really. Or really about any other recruit.

It's about the silliness of talking about what 17 year olds in general will or won't do in 18 months. Particularly when there is NIL money and all sorts of other distractions. It's about the creepiness of following recruiting (these are children legally and in reality) and the hype surrounding it. Let the coaches do their jobs, let the kids have the space and privacy to be kids, and then cheer for who shows up.

Shoot. They're taking commits from Jr High school now. Yes it's ridiculous, but…
