We would have much better traffic flow if we had better drivers. It irritates me to no end with how few cars can get through a green light because of the delay in taking off. These same people will have a one car length gap at 75 MPH but let the car in front get a three or four car length head start at a green light.
And if we would teach the zipper method for merging lanes or closed lanes it would help tremendously!
Very few seem to understand the zipper merge. They see that a lane closes in a mile and all want to get over, give dirty looks to those that do it right and wait to the final moments to merge, flip them off, not let them merge at all or worse drive for a 1/4 mile in both lanes trying to prevent people from passing.
It helps if you don't wait to merge as the barrier is about to implode your car. The zipper works best prior to the last instant. That's why people get pissed.
You clearly did not read my post and just wanted to argue.
They are not getting pissed because one is waiting until the very last instant. I drive a merge everyday home from work and can tell you there are always people driving in both lanes trying to force everyone to merge sometimes as far back as a mile. That is not how a zipper works.
ok, but that's not what I said.
Again you didn't read what I posted. I posted that people are getting upset and doing all the things from my first post long before the last instant. They are merging with a mile left of road. They are driving for over 1/4 of a mile of road trying to block both lanes.
And they are flipping off, honking and yelling at those that try to pass and merge closer to the barriers. Not the last instant but within the last few hundred yards as it is designed to be.
The problem with the zipper merge in a that you have a**holes that wait to the last second trying to maximize getting ahead of the line. I am usually pretty laidback. If a person is trying to merge at a reasonable point, I will let a car or two in the lane. What kills me is you have aggressive drivers who will get into the lane that is merging, so they can fly past everyone to get in front of others. I see all the time when traffic backs up at I35 and HWY 6. What really pisses me off is when people are bypassing traffic in the exit only lane for the HWY 6 flyover to get further up in the lane that is closing and then have to merge two lanes. This behavior pisses everyone off who is driving responsibly and merged at a reasonable point.
Agreed.
Although I don't know who is worse. Hose people that wait until the last 100 yards to merge or those that see the sign to merge and decide to drive in both lanes for over a mile trying to force everyone to merge.
Had that happen to me a few days ago. A lady tried to drive in both lanes when she saw the sign that the lane ends in 2 miles. Not many were happy with her.
