It's still there on 84/31 (Bellmead Dr), just NE of Loop 340.

It started as a beer joint that served food. Bar in front & Dirt floor in back for seating to "dine". Really good steaks in 1970.

One of the go to places 1967-1971. Miss this sheets you filled out with your food selections circled.

We went around 2010 it was smoke filled, to the point of choking. Everyone was chain smoking and the crowd was pretty seedy. Weird vibe. The woman we were with who wanted to go changed her mind and we went somewhere else. I have heard since then it has a new owner and is in better shape now. My wife and I have never gone back however.

I went last year for my birthday and it was awesome. I just liked the way it was. It was old-school no thrills just good meat and they gave it to me for free for my birthday lol

My wife and I went last year for nostalgia's sake, having last been as students. It's good value for the money.

I did a nostaglia tour there a couple of years ago. A true blue collar atmosphere with good food.

It was not an appropriate date night location when I was a student in the late 1960s but Friday night
steak night was a guys destination.

My kids occasionally have games in Axtell. Whenever they do, a steak sandwich (off the menu, IYKYK) is mandatory either coming or going.

I knew the owner in I think the late '80's. She sold it with owner financing. She got perturbed when the new owners started sharing "trade secrets" with the Heitmillers as they prepared to open. That's why they are so much alike.

Heitmillers is nothing like it used to be now. They had already started changing after the Heitmillers sold it but is completely different once they moved locations

So true. It has never been the same after the move for some reason.

And as much as the new location is different (I say new like it hasn't been 15-20 years since they moved to that location) the second location was even further away (as in different) then the original location.

Plus it was in a tough to get to spot in the Legends crossing before all the other restaurants went in there making it a go to dining spot. Which is why it closed about 9 or 10 years ago.

As many know here, KK and Donna operated Heitmiller's with great love and passion for years. Dale, their son, was a master in the kitchen.

Lines were typically out the door most nights due to their generous portions, great tasting food, and (simple but,) exceptional customer service that ran like a well-oiled machine.

One of the simple pleasures was listening to the duo of accordion and clarinet play polka music and then singing Happy Birthday to someone while KK brought a Hostess Twinkie with a handful Dum-Dums and a candle.

When KK passed away in 2002, Donna and Dale did their best to keep the restaurant running, but the heart died when he did.

Unfortunately, Dale had some demons in the form of substance abuse and struggled to fill his dad's legacy and role.

At some point Donna decided to sell Heitmiller's. IIRC they asked $3MM for the restaurant and building. I don't think she received the asking price.

The party that purchased Heitmiller's hit the proverbial jackpot . Shortly after the sale was complete, it was announced that I-35 was expanded. I heard that they received enough money to pay off the note and build the new restaurant in the current location.

You are correct. The only thing that remains of Heitmiller's is the name. The new one is a knock-off Longhorn Steakhouse.

It's not bad, I've had a few good meals there when visited, but it's no OG Heitmiller's.

thanks for that, I was out of the loop of what happened.

I had my post graduation lunch with family at Heitmiller's back in the day. Went a couple of other times on return trips in the 90's. Always a good meal.

They close at 8 PM.

I guess they're already into the senior demographic these days.

Sometimes you just have to think out of the box.

I bet for 50 customers, they would stay open a little later.

I'll make a phone call.

10 p.m. better than 8 p.m.?

I don't know for sure.

I haven't been in there in a while...They used to just serve beer if I remember right.

From the photos, it looks like just beer.

I'll talk with them tomorrow.

Maybe pair it up with a Saturday baseball tailgate before game with an after game Lone Star night (which should be about 6 p.m. or so).

If folks are from out of town anyways, why not?
