...steps down at the end of this year.

Why this is Baylor related is he was the leading candidate for our job in 99 when Harry Miller was let go..he was an assistant for Coach K at the time at Duke ...he didn't get the job and was hired as head coach at Delaware the next year.

We of course hired David Gregory Bliss..and the rest they say is history..think about all the lives.. literally..that were changed by that one decision.

Brey did a really good job on the whole. I hope this was his decision and not one forced on him.

Yep... very popular guy in the coaching fraternity..this years 1-7 start in ACC play couldn't have helped.

Looking at Coach K's coaching tree, I could argue Brey has been the most successful at the college level.

OP's timeline is a little off. I worked in the Baylor SID's office after Gene Iba "left," and Mike Brey's resume was the first one I saw faxed over. He was the Duke assistant at the time. We hired Darrell Johnson.

He became the Delaware coach in 95. I'm sure he was on the shortlist in 99, but he was already at Delaware then and very successful, which is why he got the Notre Dame job a year later.

You are correct..he was actually a candidate twice after Mean Gene and Harry.

It makes you appreciate Drew even more when you reflect on the bad history we've had between Haller, Johnson, and obviously Bliss.
