I think 30 seconds is a good shot clock for college basketball. Twenty-four works in the NBA and at the highest levels of the international game because those leagues are full of elite shot-makers. In other words, those leagues have players on every roster that can consistently score on good defense. College basketball, in general, does not. You're just going to get average shot-makers taking worse, rushed shots, making college basketball an even uglier game than it already has the tendency of being.
The defense is already ahead of the offenses in college basketball because there are more elite athletes than elite offensive basketball players. This only widens that gap.
Go watch the Baylor - UT game and then think about your last 2 sentences....there are no elite defenses, just a lot of teams with bad behaviors: poor shot selections / inability to make wide open shots or utilize the backboard......how many wide open 8 foot jumpers do we pass on for a contested 3 point shot? the game is becoming harder and harder to watch these days.
I am all for the 24 sec clock but move to 6 fouls as well. Have an independent firm that evaluates individual refs and crews - administer fines or usher them out the door for poor officiating... (ie Higgins)
Newsflash: We're not a good defensive team this year. We're not the standard.
But Division I college basketball is heavy on elite athletes and light on elite offensive basketball players. That puts defenses at a distinct advantage because it's much easier for a good athlete to get in a stance and stay in front of his man than it is to hit tough contested jumpers or finish through contact at the rim.
NBA players make those things look easy. They're not ... at all.
