Dude. I forgot he was the Big XII's Defensive player of the Year before he went down.

I was too pessimistic early. Now I'm too optimistic:

Its sports. Its allowed!

The dynamic greatly changes If JTT can give us 15 good minutes a game. Yesterday was certainly encouraging. Hopefully we keep the momentum into Wednesday's home game

Hard to know how much stock to put into his going 2 for 2 on 3 point attempts against TTech, but it at least looks like he's been working on his range. If on top of everything else opponents have to respect his 3 point shooting in addition that just adds one more aspect of his game that he brings to the floor.

Drew in postgame alluded to the unknowns, and the fact there is no one in college basketball playing after a similar injury. The question now will be how will Jonathan feel day to day. How much rest will he need between games? We may see him sit in the quick turnaround games like the Big 12 Tournament. Lot of game time decisions that I'm sure Jonathan and CSD are delighted to have.

Obviously his lateral quickness is severely hampered still. I mainly hope he doesn't reinjure it

357 days from injury like that is quite the turnaround

I have thought about this too if he will have to have games off. We saw this a lot with Tristan Clark. JTT seems to be a different type of person though with how hard he worked to get back this year.

Yeah, I don't think he will return to his elite defense prowess, at least for awhile but he can for sure elevate our overall team defense which has been subpar at best.

You're underestimating how much of his elite defensive prowess is tied to his elite basketball IQ. He didn't injure any of that.

JTT will work his way back in the rotation all through February. They will work out all the conditioning and set plays and be ready for March.

MARCH IS ALL THAT MATTERS! GET TO A ROAD GAME!
Changing the culture one road tailgate at a time.
Its ok to attend away games! No really its fun!
Meet me on ROW 1!

Were you at the Tech game. Maybe he is a little less nimble but that dude was staying in front of Tech's guards at the 3 point line. They could not get around him. Many many big men can't do that 100% healthy.

I was shocked at how quick he looked and how well he moved.

For wheee he is, amazing recovery

He was blown by 3 times for layups. I don't think that happens to EJ last year.

Why is Jon, a 6'8" big man, guarding people around the 3 pt line? Makes it a little hard to get a rebound, doesn't it.

From an Athletic article featuring quotes from anonymous league coaches:
"Getting Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua back is gonna make a big difference defensively. He made two 3s on Saturday. Did he work on that or was that a one-time thing? If he keeps doing that, you can forget it."

Our "no middle defense" requires a lot of switching. Sometimes a big gets switched to a "little".

Jon has become a Baylor Legend. His value to Baylor's team this year in every area, especially in giving leadership and stability, cannot be overstated.

I'll be interested to see if he needs rest, meaning he plays every other game. If he's good to go and can play every game the rest of the way and give us 10-15 good minutes will be tough to beat especially in March.

I could see that maybe when we have a Saturday-Monday turnaround. But the college schedule is pretty forgiving in general. With two games a week, we could get him rest in practice, if he needs it.

He doesn't strike me as the load management type, though. I think our staff will have to take care of managing his rest because he's going to want to play every chance he gets.

We only have 1 Saturday Monday turnaround left I believe. This Saturday at TCU, Monday at home vs WV. I can't see if resting unless it's required. He played 13 Saturday. Really think that number climbs as he works his way back. Can see him as high as 18-20 a game which would be HUGE

HEART doesn't require great lateral movement, proficient 3-point shooting or even mind-blowing alley-oops.

HEART can't be coached.

HEART was critically missed last March (even tho Sochan did provide some…).

HEART, if healthy, should make (t)his team the one to watch this March.

I think it's hard to accuse last year's team of a lack of heart. They almost completed the biggest comeback in NCAA tournament history in the loss to UNC. Last year's team had a number of other issues, but effort and heart weren't among them IMO.

True. But Jonathan adds so much to this team when he is playing.

I agree completely with this.

EJ is a difference-maker in many ways.

If what we saw vs Tech holds for the rest of the season, EJ can be a game changer & lead us to some great victories.

I hope he stays healthy!!

I think the TV announcers for the Tech game said the same thing: in his culture last name is important & he hates having it abbreviated. IIRC, something like that was said last year too. Considering what he means to Baylor, I think that's a reasonable request easy to honor.

This is SO true. Having him back is a boost to the entire team. His ability, attitude, maturity and work ethic lifts everyone.
