Any more details on what happened to him tonight beyond just the ambiguous "leg injury" the broadcasters mentioned?

I just posted this on the game thread. I watched the end of the first half again and saw a slight limp as he was laboring up and down the floor to end the half. I didn't see an obvious injury like a twisted ankle or anything. The worst fear flashing through my mind is what if he aggravated the foot injury. Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed for sure.

Anyone know why Josh O didn't play tonight?

True but with Flo having four fouls and JTT having three, Lohner came in for 8 minutes - I would have thought that would be Josh O off the bench first to replace the big guys in foul trouble.

For what's it's worth Drew said in the post game LJs issue isn't believed to be related to last seasons injury

It's an Achilles issue. Not good if you have ever had one. Hope he is back soon, but kinda scary.

That's good news

I feel for LJ. He basically missed 70% of last year and has already missed 3 1/2 games this year. He has supreme talent but unfortunately his body just doesn't look like it's gonna hold up to the rigors of a lengthy basketball schedule each year.

Not really. Even if "just" achilles tendinitis, I had it before and it feels like running with a razor blade in your heal. Can be extremely painful and debilitating especially for a guard like Cryer who relies on quickness, stopping / starting, making cuts, coming off screens etc. These movements would only aggravate the injury. If Cryer is out an extended period, it would devastate our rotation. Langston was becoming more and more effective as a 4th guard. Langston would have been a perfect fit with EJ coming off the bench. Langston is a terrific low post scorer and Drew has started running plays for him to score in the paint against smaller guards. Perfect lineup combination for positionless basketball with EJ camping out on the perimeter hitting 3s. Now we are stuck with Bonner as a 4th guard, who in his limited minutes appears to have regressed mightily since dropping out of the rotation. Then if / when Cryer returns after a potential extended absence, it will take a few more games for him and the team to gain continuity and rhythm again. Sometimes it just feels like we can never have nice things

I only meant it's good news if the injury isn't as bad as last year. Any playing time we get from him this year is a good thing. It already has been.

I must have missed where Cryer was diagnosed with a Achilles injury

What is the source for this? All I've seen is "lower leg injury" and in the post game presser Drew just said it's not related to his previous foot issue.

It's really a shame. Good guy, very good player. Top level college sports are so hard physically that some bodies just can't hold up.

Would Drew consider three bigs if Cryer is out?

George
Flagler
Thamba
Daniels
JTT

Daniels can play the 3.

JTT can hang out at the top of the key.

Josh O takes over for Thamba.

Another big for JTT at the 8 minute break.

Love comes in for Daniels.

At the end of the halves we play three guards, Thamba and Daniels.

Play lots of zone.

Any chance?

Who is Daniels? Bridges?

I don't know enough about it but I would think probably not. It seems to me that Love would be in there somewhere. And I would expect to see more if Bridges.

I meant Love coming in for either Flagler or George. Start just two guards since we are down to three we trust, if Cryer is out for an extended time.

Start JTT but we know he can't play long minutes, but he seems to have developed an outside shot so he'd play more on the perimeter than in the past.

I just don't see starting George, Flagler and Love with Bonner the only alternative to those three, and with an athletic young big guy (Josh O) getting no playing time.

Sorry for the confusion...I was just trying to imagine how Drew will handle the rotation if Cryer is out for an extended time.

I wonder if they would consider pulling Grimes' redshirt? If worst case scenario and Cryer is shut down again.

Does bball have a similar redshirt rule like football as far as being able to play some minimal number of games without losing the eligibility year?

No. Participate in 1 game in basketball for 1 second and you have officially blown your redshirt. Several conferences have proposed a change in the basketball rules to mirror football but it has never happened.

IMO, if Grimes can contribute positively while Cryer or anyone else is out. He should play regardless of redshirt. If he's not ready yet keep his shirt on.

On the difference in the redshirt rules between FB and BB,I think the FB rule allowing play in a limited number of games yet still be a redshirt was a compromise short of allowing an entire 5th year of competition that was being pushed by Grant Teaff and the AFCA.Some stakeholders opposed the change because it would result in fewer different student-athletes receiving football scholarships.I guess some effort has been made to pass a similar rule for basketball.

"lower leg injury"....as vague as humanly possible.

IowaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yup as vague as possible. However, if he's practicing even in a limited capacity it's clearly not considered a severe injury that will keep him out a long period

Agreed. On the surface that is encouraging news. Fingers crossed he will be 100% sooner than later.
