It's for cameras. It helps digital and video cameras detect a true white, so that you get more true color. Otherwise, the colors in your images or video can end up too warm or cool depending on the lighting.

So before you shoot, you need to white balance your camera by pointing it at something white. Scott Drew always holds up a white piece of paper for the TV news people before any press conference starts.
