Never seen a baylor team quit like that at home

There are certain teams and certain styles that certain teams just don't match up with. Iowa St. and K.State (thanks Tang!) are those two for us this year. Say what you want about effort and quitting (Ha!) and Drew (HaHa!), but there is a reason we lost to Iowa State twice and K State twice. These two teams are tough defensive, grind you into the ground type of teams. They are blue collar and very physical. A good comparison was the National Championship game when our in-your-face, work-for-every-shot team just cut the legs right out from under Gonzaga. No different than what Iowa St. and KState (and Marquette) did to us this year. Our guards are undersized and our bigs are not offensive threats. Now the question is, can we do something about it after two beat downs during the regular season? This first round game will say a lot about our tournament chances. If we don't recover and adjust then we have just certified the blueprints on how to beat Baylor. Time for our coaches and players to make the necessary adjustments to beat this menace.

How is it possible, that on Sr Day, last home game of the Ferrell Center era, virtual packed house just waiting to erupt, the team is not energized? It doesn't make sense. Drew needs to read his room better, but he said he depends on a player led team, not a coach led team. His words after the Natty win.
Can anyone who was at the game comment on Drew's technical foul? Did it look more like he was trying to get the team fired up or that he actually lost control?

I don't think anything was announced except that it was a technical.

From my viewpoint the officiating was atrocious, our guards were being mugged up and down all over the court with very few calls. At the same time we were consistently being called for touch fouls. I really believe Scott was totally fed up

If it was to get our team fired up, I'm sad to say it didn't work.

By the end of the game, I think the guys were just gassed. It didn't make much sense because the other team played harder from start to finish.

1:36 mark of the 1st half, about the 49:00 mark of the replay. IowaSt puts up a 3 from left baseline. Bonner under basket with Kunc from IowaSt. Kunc hooks Bonner's right arm with his left, and when ball bounces off rim comes around and rabbit punches Bonner in the face with his right fist while still hooking him. Bonner goes flying down out of bounds. Ref under basket calls common foul with no apparent attempt to review. Drew goes ballistic and points at ref right in front of the punch. Older ref at half court who had no view of play under basket immediately T's him up. This was after 3-4 no calls when IowaSt was clearly shoving on defense or going over the back on rebounds.

During the game I was noticing that the tall dark haired ref was the one with the most dubious calls. On the broadcast I noticed Fran said that he (Casey) was a young ref who had never called a BU game and the older ref T'd up Drew to protect him. Cursory review of replay because refs aren't going to retract a T they called for pointing out they missed an obvious Flagrant 1.

Was the ref that T'd up Drew the same ref that T'd him up against OSU? I'd be shocked if this isn't the first time in Scott Drew's career that he was T'd up in consecutive games. Virtually impossible for a non-cursing coach to have this happen in back-to-back games unless there is a specific official that for whatever reason wants to be the star of the show. Scott Drew going "ballistic" is not the same as Bill Self, Jamie Dixon, or Bob Huggins going ballistic.

Not sure who T'd him in Stillwater but that crew included Higgins (i.e., frosted tips) and Pollard (whom I call "No-Neck" because he lacks one). Saturday the ref that T'd him must have been Ray Natili, because Pettigrew was the black ref and Pacsi (I thought Fran said "Casey") was the young one whose calls were inconsistent at best.

We've seen Natili a bunch: he worked the win over KU in Waco back in January, our loss in Ames, the win over Washington St at AAC, and the blowouts at Marquette and against UVA. His 6 appearances are the most for us (more than Higgins with 5). Pettigrew was with Higgins for our win in Lubbock, was with Kissinger (the bald one) in S Dakota for the Gonzaga win, and worked a meaningless win over Nicholls St in December. Contrary to what Fran said, Pasci was in Waco for the Tarleton game in December.

We actually went on a run after that ..then Iowa State went on 2 runs..

Sometimes a horrible loss like this right before the tournament is what a great team needs to know they are not invincible.

I've always been wary of entering the tournament on a long winning streak, because sometimes the team needs to know what a loss feels like.

We've been blown out several times this year, we should definitely know what loss feels like

God how I miss that 2021 squad. So fun to watch and so dominant. Talk about spoling the next few years expectations

Team chemistry is so fragile. Key is obviously a very good player, and by all accounts, a good teammate. Why then did Baylor look like a Natty contender with him out, and an also ran with him back?

I agree with both of you. This isn't the case of some team losing focus from success and needs a wake up call. They aren't good enough for that and big losses continue to happen. They need wins and cohesiveness not losses.

Having to play this team again will tell us what we need to know. If they just let it go and don't really push them in spite of a mildly bad matchup.. then we aren't it. Iowa St is a decent basketball team that plays tough defense and has decent size at guard.. thats it. We are just a little slow footed at guard so we can't exploit their weaknesses as well.

But a tough matchup for a good team should mean a grind it out close game not two blowouts. Need to show up to this one.

I personally believe we will show up for this one. Get one big 12 tourney win should lock up a 2 seed. That's all the motivation we need.
