Good call. I never understood Houston being a significant tourney favorite as I've said a few times throughout the season. They were never the best team in the country. Miami simply outclassed them.

This is why those who reference the metrics need to be careful. They are fairly accurate for high major schedules. They cannot accurately adjust for teams that play efficiently against mostly weak teams. Based on rough math you should discount those teams (St Mary's, Houston) about 3-4 points on a Kenpom like rating. Which is exactly where St Mary's and Houston would be. This isn't hindsight as we were talking about this during the season.

2021 Gonzaga finished 3 points above any other team while Baylor was clearly the best team in the country. Gonzaga had a historically good rating which even slightly discounted would show they were special.. just not the best.

Now with all that said I had Gonzaga as a darkhorse and they pass the eye test a little better than the other 2 over the last several weeks. They also play more physical than prior years. Think the winner of UConn v Gonzaga is the favorite. Uconn in top form and healthy Ucla have been the best teams in the country and there is a gap after that. Anybody's game now as Uconn is slightly inconsistent.

Miami had way too much offensive skill and talent. Not a coincidence this is one of the only times Hou's defense has looked weak. Sampson ball avoids upsets and stomps weaker teams by overwhelming them physically. Once high D1 teams that can match the physicality and athleticism. they get outskilled. Its a weakness of his system

Who wins the nightcap Texas or Xavier ?

Previous high point total against Houston this year was South Florida with 75.

Miami's run is crazy. They were worse than us statistically on the defensive end coming into this tournament. But they've put things together during this run.

They're a much tougher team mentally than BU (not a diss) they just are. Much more potent offensively because they have so many ways they can score. It'll be fun to watch them Sunday

What's difficult to accept is that Loveday and Kalkbrenner both played on the same AAU team in Louisville and in those days Loveday generally played more and was generally thought of as being better than Kalkbrenner.

Can you imagine if Pack was still at K-State?

Too bad Loveday could not give us some of what Kalkbrenner did, but without the flopping.

Sometimes you just don't know what you have with a big man until age 20 or later. I seem to remember Bill Russell had zero offers out of HS, got noticed in Junior College.

That's just the madness of March. If Drake finishes them off, the narrative around that team and this season is completely different. They went from a team that should have been bounced in their tournament opener to one that could legitimately win a national title.

Reminiscent of Tyus Edney for UCLA in 1995. Down 1 to Mizzou in the first round with 6 seconds left, Edney goes coast to coast and lays it in at the buzzer. UCLA wins by 1 and goes on to win their last national title.
