Just thought I'd start a thread to hold any updates regarding the Transfer Portal around the Big 12 and recruiting.

UNLV transfer Keyshawn Hall tells me these schools have reached out since hitting the portal:

Louisville
Baylor
Ohio State
Georgetown
DePaul
Providence
Ohio
Toledo
Eastern Michigan
+a few others

I'm interested to see what our guard group looks like next year. If everyone with eligibility returns, we'll have six guards next year before transfers.

I don't see how that works with everyone playing.

I'm trying to find a couple of the other tweets that had us having "spoken" with other guards in the transfer portal. Makes me wonder if the staff kinda expects additional attrition or maybe just hedging their bets in precautionary mode?

I wouldn't be surpised if Bonner leaves for a starting role elsewhere. And who knows if we lose someone else like an LJ Cryer if a program throws big NIL $ at them. Either way, since we like to roll out 3 guard lineups, 6 guards isn't that much of an overload at the position.

We usually settle on an eight-man rotation, though. We're not going to have playing time for three reserve guards by Big 12 play.

We need at least 3 portal studs, if not 4. No development players, please.

That is a delicate balance. I don't see us bringing in 3 or 4 portal guys wanting/needing immediate playing time unless we have multiple guys leave. Bring in too many guys who want/need to play immediately, your rotation will get crowded and there are not enough minutes to go around. Especially since Drew likes a tight rotation, 8 or 9 guys at the most. Other roster spots for guys willing to redshirt and develop which have been the foundation of our program over the past decade.

How many freshman were ready to play this year on Baylor's team? I doubt Drew brings in that many. I just said I would like to see that. Tired of seeing freshman one-and-dones seldom panning out for a full year. Last two years there has been a bit of a wall hit by stud one-and-done freshmen. As good as George is, he faded. Maybe it was injury. Who knows but we need some players who can play - start or backup.

George was a freshman who was big 12 freshman of the year and started for us, so I would say he contributed. Josh O contributed early on before EJ was able to return, so even as more of a developmental player he also contributed. Next year we are bringing in 2 freshman, Miro and Walter, who will both probably start. Along with Grimes they will replace George and Flagler in the backcourt rotation. What I'm hoping to get from the portal is a Mark Vital clone who can defend and bring some physicality, and another big as EJ health insurance or in case EJ decides not to keep playing. Our backcourt will remain loaded if everyone returns. Would love to get a couple portal additions who can contribute immediately in the areas we need help with the most, defense and grit. As always I'm sure our staff will find a spot for another diamond in the rough who they will look to redshirt and develop.

Would seem very odd, if true. I think some will project just because Drew has been successful with transfers.

Love (Caleb, not Langston!) is an inefficient volume shooter. Essentially, a less talented K. George. He can win you a game, but he will shoot you out of a few others while he's at it.

I would be shocked if we're his final destination.

Let me know when we talk to someone that can play defense.

Would be very strange. Too much freedom in our system for a player that is so inefficient.

Needs a staff that can reign it in. Delicate balance I don't think could be managed by either side.

Talked to a buddy of mine that is tied in to UNC, he said that there is something going on that is not right…some rumors of possible improprieties. They obviously have had 5-6 guys jump in the portal. Will be interesting to see what their incoming class looks like. Hubert will get one more year, but if he has another seasons with zero quad one wins he will be gone.

Dang. From title game to possibly fired in 18

I think he is going to have a hell of a time fielding a decent team with most of these guys leaving. Bacot is coming back, but someone has to pass him the ball. After the arrogance of their fan base last year, I won t mind seeing them fall apart.

Always baggage with 2 school transfer guys but also some maturity, but I would stay away from players that are too transfer prone.

We need to focus more on the frontcourt than the backcourt.

We could bring back all of our guards and be in pretty good shape there. Our frontcourt is a mess right now. I'm sure we have plans to fix that, but until it is fixed, that will remain the biggest key to avoiding a disappointing season in 2023-24.

I love Josh O's upside and I am hoping our staff works their developmental magic over the offseason. If we can get another big either from Missi reclassifying or from the portal to split minutes with Josh, and another forward to rotate in with Bridges, I would be thrilled. Hopefully all of our guards return but our coaches might know something we don't so maybe they are looking at portal guards preemptively.

I'm actually hoping Missi doesn't reclassify. I think we need some experience at the center position. If we have three freshmen and a JUCO transfer all cutting their teeth at the DI level at the same time, in addition to Josh O, who is still raw, I don't see us competing at the top of the Big 12 next year.

I'd like to see us get a transfer post and a transfer forward. Then we could use Josh O and Lohner as limited-minute role players if their play doesn't warrant more than that. Otherwise, we'll be forced to rely on one or both, which is a risky proposition.

This I've been hammering on this for months. Josh O is still probably a year or 2 away and who knows about JTT. Doing nothing via the portal to address the front court would be a mistake imo

I agree, a portal big and a portal forward would be ideal. I do think Josh O might be ready for more next year though after an offseason to get stronger.

I'm cool with Josh O forcing his way onto the court with improved play. I just don't want a roster hole to push him into a role he's not ready for.

I don't think we need star transfers. I just want a couple of solid, veteran players capable of coming in and contributing at a competent Big 12 level to bring our frontcourt closer to the level of our guards.

Yes. Completely different from the culture of JOY. Self won't hold onto a Lohner, a Jordan Turner, or a Loveday to be practice players. Produce immediately or be gone.

Interesting, thought he was a solid piece for them. With Johnson and Nowell out of eligibility I assumed he was in line for a much bigger role
