Big Cigar donors are the only way this happens. And it's money spent just for ego.
And if I was a Big Digar Donor I wouldn't find satisfaction in buying a win.
I don't know how this shakes out but it doesn't bother me if we lose because we are not buying wins. I do wish player payments would be public knowledge so we know which teams are buying wins.
This. All those lamenting our lagging NIL program seem to be missing the obvious. This money has to come from from somewhere -- an external source, specifically -- and most (myself included) think it's a colossal waste of money.
I'm all for college athletes profiting off their work. But that money should be coming out of their universities' record-high athletic revenues, not booster's pockets.
To me, this falls directly in the "it is what it is" file. I'm not going to complain about our inability to raise funds toward a cause I, myself, think is ludicrous. We either find another way or we fail, and I'm ok with that.
Payment of athletes by the school, or athletic department, is not allowed by the NCAA. Players seem to be able to get money everywhere else, so long as the University isn't doing it. I agree this is a bad system, and should be modified. Unfortunately, NIL, though it may be modified somewhat, is not going away. Baylor, with the recent investment in a Football Stadium and the ongoing building of a new Basketball venue, has no choice but to try to compete in this NIL space. How many times do you think your top level coaches are going to hear from recruits, "I'd love to play for you, Coach, but there is a $100k difference between playing in Waco and elsewhere", before your beloved Coaches look for better pastures? Failure to be at least competitive in NIL will make us noncompetitive, and highly vulnerable in the next wave of conference and superconference mergers.
