Pretty expensive choice of words. If this would have been at UT or Berkeley he would have been gone as there would have been massive protests. Huggins is old school, and old school doesn't work in this new woke school world. It was a mistake to be sure, but if this is the first time he has used language like this he deserves some grace.
Refraining from using that word, and receiving consequences if you do, isn't "woke." It's basic human decency.

Whatever…I hope he shows up to these worthless meetings carrying his stool and dressed in drag.
God forbid someone of influence actually grow in their understanding of how their words and actions impact others.

West Virginia is one of the reddest states..I certainly wouldn't call them woke.

There's no Woke Police out there writing tickets for politically incorrectness. West Virginia..the school..answers to it's fans..alumni..and constituents..so they can do whatever the hell they want as far as punishing him

You act like the citizens of States have any control over the campus culture of the State universiies.

Universities in America are increasingly a monoculture of political and cultural progressive ideology.

Does ut-austin, UNC-Chapel Hill, IU-Bloomington, University of Iowa, KU, or UGA reflect the values of the conservative people of those States?

Come on

West Virginia as a State might be very red... but WVU wants to be accepted by the rest of American academia and takes its administrative and cultural cues from that over culture.

"Cracker"? Do you live in an episode of Good Times? I haven't heard that word used in years.
And it's a false equivalency to begin with. No white person is really offended by the word cracker. To equate it with words created and used by the majority to dehumanize already marginalized populations is absurd.
Speak for yourself.

I am very offended by racist anti-white language...and I would not stand to be called a cracker or honky to my face.

I experience that too often growing up in my pubic school to let racist slurs go unanswered by me.

Good response. Until all races can see themselves in the mirror as the chance to be equal, which each of us has to earn beyond basic expectations of a normal functioning respectful society, there will always be generational victimhood bread. It's just a loser mentality.

I've tried to help so many that succumbed to it and wasted away their life fighting a battle they conceded when they had everything to gain

The fact anyone of one race can think to tell someone of another race what can or should be or not be offended by is absurd.

I know plenty of white people that consider "old white guy" as dog white racist slur but those that say it seem to think it gives them something

Me can't even eradicate the most apparently horrific word from one sub culture.

People can demand to be "equal" all they want but in the end, we each have to earn it for it to be lasting. Otherwise it's just a handout that amounts to most nothing and ends up hurting everyone. Jobs, promotions, checks, special treatment, fake applause.

In the end it matters not and is just another trick foisted on people.

And I would disagree here, while there is not a woke police unit, you can be damn sure that the media will be out to get you if you say anything remotely disparaging about the trans or gay community, even if it warrants discussion that there are some serious mental health challenges in the transgender community. Everyone is real quick to normalize a kid switching genders, so much so that in Oregon you can do it at 15 without parental consent, in Washington it is 14. If you even challenge that as questionable action you are criticized for being a bigot.

Cancel culture = woke police, judge, jury, & executioner (thankfully, not in the literal sense)

Amen on the problems with transgenderism. What they want to do to children is evil.

I honestly do not know what kind of person Huggins is. I do know that it is not defined by one stupid statement made in a live interview. Granted the circumstances make it much more stupid.

All of this is really stupid. He said something stupid & insensitive but it's all a huge overreaction. All because some peoples' feelings are hurt?? Reality doesn't care about someone's feelings. I can only imagine what that "sensitivity training" will look like. Maybe some Orwellian indoctrination based upon lies?

Since when are double standards wrong . Or did they become woke too?

You can punch a guy that punches you..you can't punch a woman who punches you..you walk away or restrain her..that's a double standards.

I can call my girlfriend a ho..you call her one..I'm kicking your ass..that's a double standard..

For certain interpersonal relationships, such as your example, a double standard might make sense & be ok. For professional relationships (such as employer & employee), most business activities, & the operation of the justice system or anything else with the government they are evil, illegal & unconstitutional.

"Equal protection under the law" means something. (See the 14th amendment)

You don't think Huggins will emerge a changed man after a few hours of sensitivity training to address an attitude that may have been harbored for 50+ years?
historian

Too many variables to say:

I don't know much about the character of Huggins: How much can he endure?
I don't really know what the "sensitivity training" will entail: Is it some relatively benign videos or PowerPoints or will be grilled under bright lights.
I don't know how many sessions they will put him through or how long they will last: Only one or two brief sessions or several all-day sessions.
I don't know who is gonna to do it: Someone from within the university instructed to be gentle or a radical activist from California with an agenda?
I don't know how serious the AD is about it: Is this for show to satisfy the critics or are they going full Nazi or Commie?
etc, etc, etc

But it's a form of psy-ops, "reeducation" (aka indoctrination) & it's quite possible that it may resemble some torture techniques. It probably will involve heavy doses of propaganda, possibly most of it lies, and it may very well be the kind of stupid woke nonsense that most people would find excruciating.

It boils down to this: Do they want to break him or only to learn to exercise a little more sense during interviews?

Any and all of the above is possible.

They probably just want him to realize that using a gay slur as a casual insult serves to dehumanize people who have been outcast and pushed to the margins in this country for decades. It's cruel and unnecessary, particularly when done in a public way by a person of influence.

No it's not defined by that. It's probably best underscored by the video from his DUI arrest.

The incredible lack of judgement on his part to go on a radio show and bash gays and Catholics, deserves a lot more than a pay cut and sensitivity training.

So they now pay a guy $3.2MM per year, but there isn't another school outside of WV that would hire him.

This is the part that always amazes me, the basement level standard the "it's cancel culture" crowd holds its leaders to.

Like it or not, Bob Huggins is in a position of leadership and influence. He is a face of the University of West Virginia. If I was his boss, I'd be extremely concerned with his lack of judgment and respect for the weight of his words and actions. In addition to insulting entire groups of people unnecessarily, he completely disrespected his bosses and post by being a complete moron and putting them in a position to deal with the backlash.

It's not cancel culture to hold people accountable for the things they say and do. If a person loses his job for doing something this stupid (much less insensitive), he canceled himself.

That's far from true. Life is full of things some can do but others can't.

It's wrong for me to wear a military uniform when I didn't serve. I would never call a police officer a "pig" even though the constitution says I can. And I should never expect her to accept my verbal assault because of things like "sticks and stones" or First Amendment.

Personally, I'm offended by the amount of mysogeny and profanity on urban radio but not on country and other radio. Hear me out.

Sure, the artists say the words (because it sells) but they don't distribute and publish the words. And it's all done for profit.

So, to your point. Why can I say the N word on rap records? Because some record company can make money on it. Have you ever heard a Motown record with the N word? Earth Wind and Fire? Charlie Pride?
