It's hilarious they put a giant INTERIM on his welcome sign, like 70 font points bigger than anything else, and then had him pose next to it.

Terrible hire, it looks like this was done to keep that vaunted transfer class together in hopes of making a run this upcoming year. Not sure a hire like this is beneficial to the long term success of their program

Interim comes with a bigger paycheck I presume.

Given the timing, they really didn't have any other choice. They could either hire an interim or lose their entire roster to the portal. This is an attempt to make lemonade from the great big pile of lemons Huggins left them.

That's my point. That's not going to work in the long term. Unless this guy ends up being some hidden gem (unlikely) this was done to win this coming year and nothing more. All these prize transfers have 1 year left. They could have went and got a proven MM coach. But they panicked and hired this guy hoping for some miracle season with a thrown together roster of high level transfers

There's no time to get a proven coach. It's almost July. You'd need a couple of weeks minimum to make the hire, and then you'd be asking that guy to build an entire roster after the portal has already been picked dry of Big 12 caliber talent.

It makes way more sense IMO to let an interim handle the 2023-24 season and then either hire him permanently or start your next search at a more beneficial time next season.

If they had tried to hire a full-time coach this year, they would have risked handing that guy a first-year Scott Drew roster.

You realize they're still losing guys to the portal right? They have 2 guys who've announced they're staying so far in Battle and Kerr. I'm sure there's plenty of proven MM coaches who would jump at the opportunity to take that gig regardless of the fact it's June. To each their own, but I'm my opinion it's a desperation move by WV

They'll lose some. But if they would have tried to make an outside hire, they would have lost their entire roster before the next coach's introductory press conference.

This isn't an ideal situation obviously. Huggins screwed them big time. But I'd rather kick the can down the road one year than try to make a really late hire from a limited talent pool.

West Virginia is a good job. They'll have much better candidates next April than they would this July.

He ain't no Jerome Tang!

I hope they don't go 0-18 in league play (assuming we still play 18 league games this year). Naturally, I expect them to lose to Baylor every time they play. Probably both Kansas teams, Iowa State, Houston, & Texas too.
