If you want to blame anyone, start with football coaches getting $100 million deals and schools and conferences splitting billions while fighting to keep the players playing for free. When the dam finally broke, the idiots in charge had no way to regulate it properly. So don't act like this is on the athletes. The pendulum has a simply swinging back the other way with a vengeance.

I don't blame the athletes at all. If it were me I would go with whomever paid me the most.

Until they get some sort of salary cap or revenue sharing or something in place... parity is gone and college sports are gone.

I still can't believe the liberals are standing for this while men are paid MASSIVELY more than women.

It's sick. Absolutely disgusting.

Big miss. First in awhile head to head v Tex. Next year was set up to be a contender too. The player from NY is going to Duke.

This is why I don't follow any supposed "premium" and why I don't put much stock in these predictions. It happens but after picking up the best player in the state back to back, would have expected they could pull three in a row.

Going to have to hit the portal for a big time scorer with size. Philly kid is still really good but with so many leaving next year going to be tougher.

Have a feeling it'll be a heavy portal year. And not just rotation guys. Impact guys

We lose 4 starters for sure:

Walters Dennis Bridges Missi

Right?

Nunn can hang around for 1 more?

Nunn is a Junior. Dennis is a Senior, but has a Covid year to use if he wants. Lohner is a Senior with Covid option too.

It's a disappointment but not the end of the world. Drew knows how to coach, recruit, & use the portal. He was great at getting transfers before the portal was a thing. Multiple players on the natty team were transfers: Butler, Mitchell, Teague, Flagler, Everyday Jon. This year's team is looking great so far (admittedly very early) and we have every reason to be confident of a good season. The team will be fine.

I might be the last person to defend NIL as I also despise what the NCAA has allowed to happen in college sports. But that said, we did not likely lose Tre Johnson because of NIL$. According to on3.com, Tre already had a $533K NIL evaluation as a high school athlete. This evaluation is a little better than Jakobe's, while our other two freshman and our High School signings have NIL evaluations somewhat below that. Tre would be making that kind of money pretty much anywhere he wants to play next year. Was there more on the table at UT? Possibly, but for someone looking at a $20mm contract in a year, it would seem a bit odd if that were a determining factor in his decision.
Wish the young man good luck except if against Baylor, which would only happen in the NCAAs 2025.

There's wasn't a guarantee that he'd start next year at Baylor and get max minutes. I'm sure the pressure started to get to him when he thought about having to play for one of the all time great coaches in Scott Drew. In a premier venue for Home Games in the hands down best basketball conference.

Can't blame the little guy for going to Texas and playing in a sub par conference next year. He realized he couldn't play with the big boys.
Quinton

Nunn, Love, Josh, Little, and Grimes with two really good incoming freshman but not instant lottery level guys like the two we missed on (assuming it holds).

Much of the conference leaders will turn players so bu was in a good position. Now will be vying for multiple transfers with immediate impact.

Still in a good position since Wright and the player from AZ look to be two or three year guys but locking down the state the last two years has been big. I know losing a guy the lead on for years is hard on staff as well.

I don't worry about recruiting at all with Drew. In fact, I don't even pay attention to it, other than to check our commitment list from time to time. I know he'll bring some talented high school kids and fill any holes with experienced transfers through the portal and JUCO ranks.

He can enjoy playing for Texas who is struggling a bit at home with Rice

Sucks he went to Texas. Let's blame NIL because Baylor never lost out on a top tier recruit before. Right?

I guess that'll be the go-to excuse going forward as if it didn't happen before NIL.

I believe you are off a year on Dennis.

He played:

2019-20, 20-21 at Boise St (2 years)
2021-22, 22-23 at Toledo (2 years)

We are his 5th year. He doesn't get a 6th.

I've seen this expressed on these boards several times. How exactly is this the end of college sports?
All I see is massive TV contracts, super conferences, super sweet facilities being built and big endorsement deals

Couldn't agree more. We agree too much these days

Ten or 12 years ago this recruitment would have caused me huge anxiety. Now I don't even care because I know Drew not only has a Plan B, he has a Plan C, a Plan D, a Plan E. etc. Year after year he brings in guys who are better than they appear to be on paper.

I wouldn't count on Asemota or especially Wright being around more than 1 year. Their stock is rising exponentially.

Because this is spiraling towards nobody will be able to compete with the big rich state schools.

Eventually, it will be ut, aggy, ohio st, michigan, alabama, georgia, florida & florida st, lsu, usc, and maybe a couple of others. And that's it.

Basketball may take a little longer and the smaller schools may be able to sneak in and win a championship now and then...but we are now in the pro-collegiant era of buying players for championships.

Well, you just sort of said it...it's the end of the P5 in football. If you aren't in the SEC or B1G, you're about to be a second tier college football league.

That's why I'm completely on board with BY's vision of creating a basketball super conference.

Spot on and more reason to move the Big12 Tournament to a larger market city - Las Vegas, etc. I can't wait for the Big12 Tournament this year....just dreading going to KC

NIL won't be as big a deal in basketball as it is in football because CBB is just a one-year layover for the top players on their way to the NBA. If you know you're getting paid life-changing money in a year, you'll weigh other factors more heavily -- like fit, atmosphere, experience, program success, etc.

In football, it's different because everyone stays at least three years. It's harder to pass up life-changing money, particularly given the increased injury risk in that sport.

I don't think NIL had anything to do with it I'm sure a big selling point for him was already having the best two players in the state committed to UT and they probably told him he was the missing piece to them winning a championship. Good thing we won't have to play them twice next year

i'm leaning that direction too

i don't think it was nil so much as fit. maybe he prefers austin over waco, or it was playing time, or who was coming in etc

Can you please identify the two players from State of Texas already committed to UT? I am seeing 2 signings for the 2024 class: Tre and Cam Scott from South Carolina. I am disappointed we aren't playing them after this year, as I have enjoyed our beating them like the over hyped rented mule they have been the past few years.

Friends, some of the highest level recruits Drew goes after opt to play elsewhere. If he weren't regularly getting the Walters, the Georges and others of their talent level, we'd have something to worry about here. We can't have all the best guys, and not even KU and Duke can do that. I don't understand the angst here.

Codie was one of the bigger influencers on Tre going to UT, but I don't believe it was the primary reason.

I don't understand where the clear thought came that Edgecombe was ever coming here. We were one of his visits but most of those closest to him have always said it is basically a Duke vs. St. Johns battle with Duke about 95% of the way there. But, who knows, maybe with Tre out of the way we'll become a higher percentage. The interesting sign with Edgecombe is that it was almost assured he was gonna commit to Duke at Midnight Madness when they had those other top recruits who were ready to sign in early November and/or commit that night, in spite of those in the Northeast who have said Pitino has a big influence on his decision.
