Did we play in Lawerence today?!

My goodness the calls were terrible. A couple calls against RayJ were just unreal! He also clearly was pushed out of bounds by Garrison right in front of the ref, and no call. I am not sure I have seen home cooking that bad since our last game in Lawerence. I am not one to usually complain about officiating, but that was tough to watch. I know shots were not falling but that was a gritty win when Ok St clearly played their ass off.

I don't know what ok state did to get the KU treatment from the refs, but we could use some of it for sure.

Lots of Big 12 games are like that, or so it seams, and occasionally those calls go our way. But too often it seems like the refs hate Baylor & the opposing team has 1-3 extra players. And it's not just playing against Kansas or Texas. I know I'm exaggerating somewhat but I don't think it's by very much.

We have a commish that cares a lot about basketball. Maybe he can get the conf better refs

I don't normally complain about the officials. I try to look at it objectively, but today was bad. 20 fouls vs 14 - yikes.

We did get a nice call on a 3 point play to turn it into a 4 point play, and I think the fouls were even in OT, but still. . . Not a BU friendly crew.

That 20 to 14 fouls comparison is a bit misleading. IIRC, OSU had several of those late in the game. I seem to remember a graphic in the screen mid to late second half and we had a whole lot more fouls than them. They certainly went to bonus before we did each half.

TCU got a taste of the KU officiating today.

The crew was letting everyone play super physical and so when they did call a touch foul which they did on both transnational they were what as a former official I would say inconsistent would be a fair adjective to say about the officiating. Coaches and players only care about one thing and that is be consistent in how the game is called. This helps the flow of the game. The crew made some really great calls on some tough plays. If I have to say it a thousand times officials dont care about who wins a game. If you ha e been on the floor as an official at a high level you would understand you are so focused on the things you need to be and theere are many you don't even know the score of the game. Like anything else it is a mer of perspective and when yo experience actually learning to officiate and thousands of games later you have such a different perspective when judging officials performance. It is understandable fans are fans and passionate about their trams and players. Just saying the bug 12 refs for the most part are really good at what they do.

Nice post, joseywales, but I did have to chuckle at "trams and players"

Today was exceptionally bad. The refs missed some big calls, and arguably it was really one of the refs who seemed to be responsible for the majority of the bad calls.

I expect refs to make mistakes but today was egregious.

I get that but often seems very lopsided. Most of today's was like that… until the end.

Didn't Aggy successfully run six players on the court against us one time at Ferrell? Or was it Baylor that had six on at one time? I think we won the game.

It is a hard job with lots going on. That doesn't mean one can't take a look objectively and have an opinion that the result was unfair.

Edit - I looked it up and fouls WERE even in overtime 4/4

Nah, B12 officials absolutely favor teams or outcomes, been that way for years. And no B12 refs are not very good. Generally speaking they're an embarrassment to honest officials everywhere.

Not much different than the NBA refs trying to protect the eye ball catching star athletes to keep them on the floor.

I thought the officials called a fair game in the first half, but for some reason a switch got flipped in the second half and all of a sudden OSU was getting a home court job. It was a contributing factor to having to win it ugly, but the main thing is it still ended up being a "W".

I would agree with this. I didn't think any of the calls in the first half were as obvious as the second. It felt like there was a 5-7 minute stretch where they were calling everything on our side of the ball. Both Love and Nunn got absolutely mauled on a couple of drives and didn't get it, then on the other side we would get called for the slightest contact. One of those was a drive against Dennis, I think Small might have been the player for Ok St, he slipped on the floor and the called Dennis for tripping. I replayed it several times and Dennis never extended his leg. Not worth agonizing over every call, but there was a stretch there were it seemed like the refs had an agenda. I will say that Ok St played very aggressive defense, to their credit they make up for their offensive challenges with really good on ball defense. We had a number of open threes that could have helped open things up but they just weren't falling.

I think the most challenging thing I see with Big 12 officials over the past couple of years has been the inconsistency. I see that 33 and VB have both posted in this thread and I know they both played at the collegiate level. I'm sure they would agree to an extent that as long as you kinda know what style the refs are calling that night, whether allowing it to be physical or quick fouls just on touchs, the players can adjust their play to that style. It's when the refs allow physical play in one half, then completely flip to touch fouls in the 2nd half is what makes it really difficult.

I hate blaming officials when we lose or praising them when we win. Maybe I'm different than some, but I don't believe many of them really care who wins. But yesterday there were certainly plenty of visible unbalanced calls, particularly in the 2nd half.

Exactly - there are referees who let everything go then there are ones who call it tight. To most of their credit they'll tell you how they're going to call it before tip. Five minutes in you'll know how to play.

Then you have some refs who change during the game and it's infuriating

Basketball doesn't have conference affiliated officials like football does, so there is no such thing as "Big 12 refs"
historian

True but the refs we get often seem terrible, especially vs Kansas (or Texas in football).

Not sure who you're rolling eyes to but while basketball officials in the Big 12 are not direct employees of the conference they are absolutely contractual employees of the Big 12 for conference games.

I have heard there is a shortage of refs and that is understandable as it's kind of a thankless job. I was hoping maybe there are some outside the box type solutions as the pool of refs that our conference dips into seems poor. Maybe our commish can do something.

Who is going to ref games in Mexico?
