As a BYU fan I'm obviously happy we won. Having said that, the respect that most BYU fans have for Baylor is real, so beating you guys is kind of a mixed bag.

So let's get this out of the way, two things can be true at once, like the following:

  • The refs were bad, no doubt about that
  • I still think BYU played well enough to win without the refs, but not by 7 points. Maybe by 1 or 2.

I was amazed at the free throw disparity, but hitting 14 threes and winning offensive rebounds will make up for that. I saw a lot of discussion on the game thread about the zone, and I agree that against us playing zone is just asking to get destroyed due to 3 point shooting. That puts Coach Drew in a tough spot when man defense isn't working.

The crowd seemed really great. It didn't seem like they gave Lohner too tough of a time. The dunk he had was amazing. I don't recall hearing the crowd boo him ever, but they let him know it when he missed a shot. Either way, there wasn't the same vitriol as when we played Iowa State. Then again, you guys didn't protest us coming into the conference.

I really hope Langston gets better soon. I wasn't sure what happened. I was watching on an airplane and they were making an announcement when he went out so I couldn't hear what they were saying. Either way, we want him to get healthy.

We definitely want you guys to win out and do really well. Moving up to a 2 seed would be awesome, as would an Elite 8 run or better. I'm guessing we will be either a 5 or a 6 seed, while I will take. We expected to be terrible this season, so this has been a happy surprise.

Good luck the rest of the way. You guys are awesome.

Big 12 officiating this year has been marginal to bad all the way around and impacted all teams at one time or another.

We didn't lose to you guys because of officiating.

I thought the officials in last nights game were horrendous, but not in a biased way or against us or anything like that. I just thought they were wildly inconsistent throughout the game for both teams. I criticized calls and no calls for and against both teams. That crew was awful. BYU played an awesome game and completely earned and deserved that win.

Our bigs have got to figure out how to quickly hedge and recover when guarding a shooting or rolling center. Missi was too often lost and at one point Josh chased the PG all the way to half court on his hedge. I fear our postseason success this year will ride completely on how hot we are on offense with defense doing little to contribute to winning.

B12 officiating is always spotty.

The real ding should be placed on B12 scheduler. Playing B2B road games on both the East & West ends of the conference should never happen. B2B road games happen. But West West, West Central, Central Central, East East or East Central should be the only options. A BYU, Arizona, ASU, Utah or Colorado road game should never be paired with a Cincinnati, WVU, or UCF road game. Never Ever.

That's a fair assessment IMO.

My only slight disagreement is with the use of the zone in this particular game. Clearly, you don't game plan to heavily use a zone against an outstanding three-point shooting team like BYU, but given that nothing BU was doing on the defensive end was working and BYU was already getting plenty of open looks from three by halfway or so through the 2nd half I would have tried it to at least cut down or stop the drives inside and take the chances on whatever further damage the 3 point shots would do. Have no idea if it would've been effective and meant the difference in the game, but again, it was evident that what the Bears were doing in man defense wasn't working at all.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a continued respectful and healthy rivalry with BYU. I thought BYU should've been pursued for Big 12 membership before OUT happened and it was a matter of conference survival. BYU clearly brings the most to the Big 12 of any of the four newbies this academic year. Good luck the rest of the way and I hope you make the Big 12 proud during March madness (as long as it doesn't mean by some fluke we end up playing each other again then).

You beat us fair and square. The 2 teams are pretty even. Officials were fine this game.

How many days did they have in between games? This isn't the NBA and it wasn't a Saturday to Monday turnaround.

The NBA proves the exact opposite of the point you are trying to make.
NBA road trips are generally regional:

Dallas Houston San Antonio New Orleans
Boston NYC NYC Philly Toronto
Cleveland Chicago Milwaukee Minneapolis
Miami Atlanta Charlotte DC Memphis
LA LA Phoenix Denver SLC Portland SFA [in some combo]

The home road combos are tougher. But they are also blending a few "scheduling losses" into an 82 game schedule not an 18 game conference schedule, they are pros who aren't spending hours on education, they fly the best jets, etc.

It's tough to turn that quickly and when you combine altitude it becomes a factor. Not to mention a very tough venue to play at.

They didn't play well but I think away v home carries a ton of weight in the college game. Will be looking for high intensity this Saturday. Absolute must. Hold the panic until after that game.

That makes too much sense. It's unlikely they will have that much foresight when scheduling games.

This illustrates the dangers of super conferences stretching across the country. The Big 10 is going to have bigger & more problems with 4 schools on the west coast and 2 on the east coast. The ACC will have similar problems with most of them on the east coast & 2 in California.
