I'll trust that our HOF coach knows what he's doing, and I'm beyond grateful every time he leads us to the 1st or 2nd round of the NCAA tourney.

Great post!! Being consistently relevant for the last 12-14 years is really a testament to how far this program has come. Expectations are higher, and understandably, but having a team that makes i the tournament most years is incredible considering the starting point in 2003. I remember leaving Indy feeling so lucky to have been there to witness that game. For a program like Baylor to be in the hunt the last 5-6 years is really unbelievable. We now have a tradition of success. Think about UCLA, Arizona, Arkansas. They haven't won it since the 90s and all their programs were at the top back then. It is incredibly hard to keep a program at the top with all the changes in college basketball. UNC, Kansas, Kentucky and Duke are the only of hundreds that have been able to carry over success from coach to coach. We should all enjoy this ride.

Arent we like the winningest program the last 5 years W/L and Kansas is #2?

And if not for massive injuries we'd have had a really good shot to go back to back.

Who was gonna beat the team that held Villanova to 38 or whatever points?

At times, I get tired of our one and done players. But I don't think the solution is to necessarily not recruit them. While it's true that teams that win national championships typically are senior laden, these guys are still worth recruiting. And if it means we lose in the 1st or 2nd round, so be it.

I'm sure Drew is aware of the reality that these freshmen won't lead us to any national championships, but it's better than going 15-13 and going to the CBI. And who knows, maybe the stars will align and we will have a senior laden team again one day with our usual one and done guy to help us win another championship or get to another final four.

My tune changed when I watched Arkansas play a couple weeks ago. They are not very good, and they probably would have killed to have our "one and done" players. At that moment when I watched those players, I changed my tune. Sometimes, recruiting four year developmental players results in players who never really develop.

So, I don't want to be Arkansas right now.

I think MBB and Football have had the world change on them the past few years. In basketball, Drew and company would be recruiting the HS players they were confident to be a good fit for 2 years or better, knowing what they were getting. Now, with the portal, you may have a window of a few days to land a key player. I think for the teams that are discarding 5-6 players a year (like Arkansas), you can end up with a couple of aces or nothing. Not sure there is sufficient time to fully evaluate the talent that comes available.

On the one and done issue, I would also point out that no one can predict the future. When we signed Kendall Brown and then landed Sochan, I imagine that the staff expected one of them to stay more than one year. Sochan was not on anyone's draft chart, kind of like Missi this year. If you are going to pass on a top 25-40 rated player because he might be a one and done, you might as well pass on being above mediocre in power 5 basketball. Can you have too many freshman 5 stars? Possibly. But that limit is certainly more than 2. The issue for me is not the freshman, it is the quality and consistency of the veterans around the elite freshman, and how they all play together.

One of the main reasons most here shouldn't be too frustrated.. even though the defense has been really bad for two years. That 2022 team was not losing in the tournament if relatively healthy. And Im talking the team Without Love who tore his knee preseason. With Love, forget about it.

That same Villanova team made the final four by grinding out teams (including the Houston team folks here love). And they lost to guess who.. KU the team our duct tape roster still won a co-championship with. Would have been the first back to back in a long time and the program would be considered in rarified air. Didn't happen but it was lined up. No other standout teams outside of a red hot UNC.. that again our limping roster took to OT.

If I had to guess, I think UConn will pull it off this year.

But that isn't the typical championship team. They are typically junior (pros), some sophomore (pros), with a whole lot of experience mixed in. That is why its a complicated equation.

Its hard to plan to get a kid who is good.. but not that good (to leave immediately). The full senior route has never won. If say Houston or maybe Purdue (I think they have some younger guys mixed in) would be the first time in multiple decades. The fact its possible these last few years might be remnants of the Covid year + early days NIL/transfer.

We need to keep guys multiple years for continuity and development and mix them in with great talent fits. The sweet spot is guys who become high level nba guys in their second or third year. Again.. tough balancing act. Its easier for teams that haven't had access to those type of players in the past (Iowa St, Houston). You take the best guys you like and develop them. Its not like you have to actively reject guys who would go there bc they weren't choosing their program anyway. Makes it easier really.
