Simple. We don't play good defense.

This was brought up on another thread, but there is nothing here Nunn should have done differently. Would have been devastating and stupid to foul in that situation. Nunn crowded him without fouling which was the intelligent play. Sometimes lucky shots go in and you have to tip your cap.

I'm not going to weigh in on reasons, but if we tracked it I would be surprised if we didn't lead the country in last second chucks going in (those that were in time + those just barely late) over the decade.

I've watched other teams play and never seen anything quite like it.

I have no clue why it happens but there's been a good 7 or 8.

You could even go back to us blowing an 8 point lead with 50 seconds left at ou but that was a long time ago

Georgia state
Kstate after we threw it oob from their end at the Ferrell center
Tcu at least 4 times
Houston

That's just off the top of my head. It's almost like one expects it To Go in. I felt with missi missing odds very high a heave goes in, a layup coast to coast in 4.4 or a foul and 2 free throws.

Only team had it worse I'd venture is Texas tech erasing a natty title but that was just 1Maybe the greatest shot in championship game history

The problem wasn't the buzzer beater. That was a lucky break for them. The problem was the missed free throw. Then again, had he made it perhaps Houston would have gotten the ball inbound 0.1 seconds sooner & they would have gotten those points anyway. We can only guess.

It's so frustrating when we miss so many free throws, especially when it's most critical. It often seems to me that the opposing teams makes a higher percentage of them & them sometimes I will look at the stats postgame & realize we actually did better than the opponent.

If he makes it, we can set our defense and likely do a better job of denying the inbounds pass and stopping the ball.

The way things often go for us in these situations, even if Missi had hit the FT I wouldn't have been surprised if they still would've some way, somehow hit a buzzer beater to beat us (like what almost happened anyway). What's really frustrating is I don't recall us hitting anywhere near as many buzzer beaters to win games as have been hit to beat us.

There's a heavy luck element involved in those shots. And we've been really unlucky in the number that were made. Fortunately, we've been luckier this year in regards to when those shots were released.

The second-half defense was very good. I think we always play with effort, but we finally played with the intensity you have to on that end to slow a quality offensive opponent.

Unfortunately, our defense also helped to put us in a 16-point halftime hole and had a couple of key breakdowns at inopportune times in overtime.

This team isn't very good defensively. We're ranked 85th nationally and 12th in the Big 12 in defensive efficiency after almost 30 games. But the second half on Saturday at least showed that we're capable of dialing in on that end and making a few stops when we have to.

It's even more than that if you aren't just counting game winners. End of half Iowa st this year.

I believe around 5 were hit against us in the championship year. Now we were up 20 in some of those but it's uncanny.

Now that you mentioned it, I remember thinking that season we've got to lead the country in half court or longer Hail Mary Mary shots going in at the buzzer. Fortunately, we of course had a team for the ages and it didn't matter in the W and L category, but given additionally what transpired before that and what has happened since in this regard - it's all unbelievable. You would think the huge luck factor in all of those shots would have at least evened out to some degree over time and we would've hit at least a few of those as well, but that obviously hasn't happened.

Absolutely! I've commented on it many times as it's statistically unbeliebable.

Maybe we're due though and at some point jobu will work that snake bit stuff out of our system

Missi went full Kenny Chery (except he's like 45% from the line)

Yep. And even undefended, that's maybe a 10 - 15% shot.

Like KSU's OT streak, it will even out over time.

The only one I remember from 2021 was in Ft Worth. That was a crazy shot from past half court. It didn't matter, though, because Baylor played exceptionally well in the 2nd half.

I hope our guys can do that tonight.

We had a halftime buzzer beater in the 2021 Tourney vs Wisconsin. Flagler nailed a beautiful shot. Start at 4:30 mark:

Many on this board won't want to hear this, but a lot of this boils down to coaching, or lack thereof.

We've often times had personnel out of position, not cut off angles, not force the dribbler to use their weak hand, or just look absolutely lost in those critical moments.

Many of those problems could be worked on in practice. Should be worked on in practice.

But from the looks of things, that doesn't appear to have been a key focal point over the years, along with free throw shooting.
