The handshake line is so unnecessary and serves no purpose...and you won't convince me otherwise that getting rid of it is an example of the downfall of Western Civilization as we know it.

Way to keep your eye on the ball there Self. A vibrant handshake line seems like the big issue during the worst season of your KU career.

I agree about the handshake line 1,000%. Fans and certainly coaches and players all act like every game is a matter of life and death. We really do. Then all are supposed to in one second switch to be best friends and gracious losers and humble winners. It is just stupid and silly to me. Let them all hang out at the shootarounds, in the hall on the way to the bus 45 minutes later, or even in the press conferences. That I am fine with. I am all for cordiality and kindness in real life, I really am, but asking for that in the handshake line is asking for trouble! Let the winners celebrate for a minute with teammates. The line even ruins that. Let the losing team commiserate with their teammates. As you can see, this is a pet peeve of mine!

Handshake lines aren't about friendship. They're about keeping sports in perspective, showing competitive maturity and respecting the game -- and opponent -- you're playing.

I view handshake lines as a litmus test. Anyone who can't go through a handshake line after a game without embarrassing the school or team he's playing for isn't someone I want a part of my program.

Being competitive is a good thing. Being a sore-losing ******* isn't. If youth players and high school athletes can go through a handshake line without incident, there is no reason whatsoever that we can't and shouldn't expect the same of college players and coaches.

I noticed both Dixon at TCU and Terry at UT doing "fly by" handshakes in the line after our recent wins.

On the women's side Sherri Coale at OU and Karen Aston at UT used to be queens of the "fly by" after Mulk's teams would routinely kick their respective butts. Good memories.

I think this is a generational issue. Self came from an era of showing a bit of respect in such situations. He's old enough to have a bit of that old school sentiment about him. That sentiment is almost gone with the wind.

I agree with Self. Tang is ultra competitive and probably remains amped up for longer than some. Still, not an excuse to be salty. CSD is a good model in this area. Flybys from him are rare.

Self may not like Tang for other reasons

* Split regular season past 2 years
* KU lost in 2nd round of NCAAs last year
* Tang went to Elite 8

It's only 1 season where KSU got a lot of love nationally and Kansas did not.

I would guess they've gone head-to-head in several recruiting battles as well.

Tang came from a program with fewer losses so he's now having to get used to more losses. I'm sure it takes a toll. Oh wait, like BU football I guess.

A quick fly by in the handshake line is infinitely preferable to stopping to cry on the other coach's shoulder.

I don't really see much unusual here

To me it even looks like Teague is saying "good job"....but not sure

Saw clips from both KSt and Kansas games from this year. Very similar handshakes from Tang and Self both times. Don't think Self is remembering things accurately.

For a HOF coach Self is remarkably thin-skinned. I can't think of another great coach making any note of the handshake line, or, for that matter, what other coach would care whether or not the opposing team was paying attention to the pregame tribute video?

The first two paragraphs are spot on.

I'm a coach.
It is character building to be able to shake someone's hand after they just kicked your ass.
It is also character building to kick someone's ass, and shake their hand without talking trash.

The handshake line is you teaching your student athletes that whatever beef may have transpired on the field or on the court is now squashed.

There was a time in my life where I didn't get the handshake line, but now I do wholeheartedly.
I have classmates from BU that never played sports and grew up affluent...and some of these people did not know how to take an L in their life.
