Is he singing, "I Get a Kick Out of You"?

Or is there a health issue?

His cardiologist recommended it.

Because he left his heart in San Francisco.

based on what he has said it seems like he is not on board with the changes (paying players and what that entails) in college sports

"And when you feel it's time, like Jay did, like Coach K, maybe Saban, it's their choice. And you can sit here and complain and gripe. Or you have a decision to make. Either you try to do it in your way or you get to make that decision. So I think Jay Wright probably foresaw where this is going. ... It'll be better whenever there's regulations. Is that three to five years away? Who knows?"

If that is case, then what a loser to quit right before the season starts....

I get that he might like the new changes with the portal and NIL but to quit right before the season seems bizarre. Do it either at the end of last season or the end of the one coming up.

I did read this morning that it was announced the retirement was not health related.

So seems either like he completely got disgusted with NIL and transfers or a more serious issue/scandal/activity.

I would have to think something behind the scenes we don't know.

Yeah, my thought was either he's got a health issue or there's something really wrong. I can see him getting fed up with the new system, but if he was, he should have retired in March. Retiring now is really hard on the organization.

Plane is flying right over the heads of a lot of people in this thread.

Tony is a coach's kid. That's all he knows. Coach's kids usually learn from their fathers to be loyal to their staff if the kid decides to enter the profession. Tony did. And when it was time for him to exit he showed that loyalty.

Tony knew he was not going to coach this year but if had announced during the summer, UVA would never have given anyone on his staff an opportunity to be the head coach. They would have been forced by media pressure to look for a big name. By quitting weeks before the season began it ensured a member of his staff would get to be the head coach for at least a year and hopefully prove himself to the administration and fans. And it happened just like that as his right hand guy was elevated.

Did he keep the rest of the staff? It's difficult to see otherwise. There's no time to look for replacements.

I struggle to follow that logic. Would we at Baylor react the same way if Drew pulled this ??? Unlikely. 30 day transfer window for kids to leave - wouldn't surprise if some do. Hopefully, it's just this. That there isn't something going on behind the scenes (scandal) that they are trying to keep quiet.

Of course not! If Drew did this, fingers would be pointed, rending of garments would commence, and fury-posting would last until next season.

I'm not saying I know Tony personally, but I have followed his family for years via basketball. I would be highly surprised if there is any type of scandal. He is as upstanding as it comes. He is in line with Drew as it relates to character and faith.
