His team this year has no talent. It's minor miracle -- and a testament to how down our league in this year -- that he's kept them around .500 in Big 12 play.

They have one of the better home records in league... just couldn't win on road.

Utah fan and media sites seem to have 2 NBA guys (one of them an assistant with the Mavs), Richard Pitino and Bryce Drew as the targets. Of course, we know how these initial targeted lists and wish lists typically go.

The Mavs guy must be the guy who interviewed for the BYU job.. Apparently he's Mormon.

Yep. Think you are spot on. I searched for the preliminary BYU list from last Spring and he was on it. He was an assistant with the Jazz before he moved to the Mavs.

Edited to add: Also forgot that he played on the Utah team who made it to the National Championship game in the late 1990s.

Unless there's some weird insubordination between coach/administration behind the scenes or a hidden issue with his players, the only reason you fire a guy with 4 games to go and prior to the conference tournament is make sure you get the guy you want and get him under contract before someone else potentially gets to him. So, it seems like they have identified who they want and we should hear a new hire name in the next couple of weeks. Am I reading it wrong?
