Since he didn't visit any schools, I had a feeling it wasn't us. This smells of someone on Providence's staff with whom he had a previous relationship so as long as they were in his agent's ballpark financially then that's where he was going.

I don't follow recruiting as closely as a lot of of you do…but the thought of adding a defensive minded player sounded great. Hopefully we can find another one.

He was adequate offensively but very strong defensively. I was really hoping we had a good chance for him because of those defensive skills, and I thought we had a shot until they quickly announced yesterday he was deciding today. That part immediately worried me because I thought either: a) Kentucky pulled out the checkbook and just bought him; or, b) what we saw happen with Providence -- likely some close connection with a coach or existing player that none of us know publicly.

It's my belief that his dad had a lot of influence on his decision. Still, we just gotta get that deal done, it was all but a sure thing until the 11th hour

On to the next prospect I suppose

The new Providence coach is a bulldog. Went from Arkansas State to South Florida and only stayed there a year. He's tenacious.

Very well could be. I claim no inside knowledge on this. Just seems like if money had been the primary qualifier, Kentucky would have blown Providence out of the water.

Like Evil said above, credit to Providence's head coach who has been a bulldog his entire career. Maybe he just outhustled everyone or Byrd's dad liked him more.

Could be a solid role player for a championship level team. Florida and Michigan had a few of these guys the last few years.

The staff has the right idea targeting this type of player. Unfortunately it didn't work out but it's a good scout .

Aiden Sherrell (Alabama Big) is coming on a visit today. He'll go from us to Providence for a dinner with the staff tonight, then to Duke this weekend. Still a lot of teams in the mix, won't have a really good idea on who is leading until after these visits are concluded.

Haven't heard anything else super notable lately, seems the pivot after Byrd's commitment has been a quiet one

He went into the portal with a DNC to Michigan St to go back to his home state. Sounds like he changed his mind?

Does Providence run a similar system now? Didn't expect their new coach to be our main recruiting competitor.. seems they're in on every dude we're looking at.

I think Michigan St is still the consensus thought he's just making his rounds and it seems more open than when he first entered with that DNC

Makes sense. A good agent is gonna tell him to at least hear out other potential places. Someone may end up offering him a better deal.

I've seen several guys do that now. Punch went into the portal as a DNC and now he's apparently visiting several schools. A couple others did the same thing including the 7-1 big from Arizona State who had DNC to Gonzaga and then St. Johns got into his agent's ears and now he's visiting there too.

Not saying NIL doesn't matter, but I'm guessing that these transfers and their parents are also comparing different programs' trajectories.

Brett Decker isn't a bad first pickup at all

Very lackluster defender but might be one of the best shooters in the country. Not sure if I expect him to be a starter level guy because he really can't do anything outside of shoot the ball but who knows, if CSD and staff can get the right group of guys for a starting lineup and just need to juice it with a shooter then he could see a spot. A lot of other programs were in on him but it wasn't necessarily a bidding war, seems like Baylor just won out for him

TLDR: Great shooter, doesn't really defend or pass, cost-efficient pickup to start the portal cycle for the staff, probably best served as a 6th-8th man a la Isaac Williams IV last year

What JJ white was brought in to be basically.

This time last year most didn't see it with JJ translating to the high D1 level. The staff was scrambling after the Wright situation.

This kid looks like he'll actually bring off the bench scoring, and it should translate if he isn't asked to do too much. Much better 7th or 8th man potential than last year.

Much better than JJ White was as a player, though. A fair number of power schools were after him too, we just won out. More likely this one translates into a real player (with multiple years of eligibility left!)

My interest in college athletics has gone down so much that I doubt I'll be watching Baylor at all within a few years. This simply isn't enjoyable. There's quite literally zero rules. This isn't sustainable and eventually it'll all blow up. But unfortunately before that happens the death of college athletics will have happened
