Challenging Year. Patience Required.

This team may be Coach Drew's most challenging rebuilding task since the first several seasons after he arrived. I can't think of another.

He's working with a roster of FIVE transfers, including, Gillespie, a former walk-on at a D3 school (plus another two transfers, Teague & Mitchell, sit this season), a former BU football player (Okeke) and three true-freshmen.

One of our/his two most experienced players, Lindsey, is, of course, out for the season.

Kegler has only played in two games. Mason was injured most of the past two seasons & earlier this season.

Allen & Bandoo weren't even full time starters at their respective junior colleges.

We have little size/experience with true-sophomore Clark at 6'9" & two true-freshman at 6'10".

We all know that learning a system takes some time, but developing chemistry can take much of a season. "Good chemistry can defeat good talent." We may be a little down on "talent" this year, so...........

Add the fact that most of our guys are new to D1 basketball, & it's easier to understand the challenges facing Coach Drew & our Bears.

The second half of the Wichita State game instilled some optimism, outscoring them by 21 in the second half (granted they were not playing with their earlier intensity, but still, 21 points before a full house on the Shockers' home court?!).

We have just four games before the onset of B12 play on January 5th. The conference looks competitive top to bottom. Let's hope our chemistry & rotation gels in time..........

Patience required.

This just may be a very trying season for us fans, with our usual high expectations, but even more so for our overachieving coach!

9th in 2019 or worse.
Unfortunately, Drew has no size on the roster. This will take a recruiting class or two.
The constant roster building through transfers and jucos will always have them chasing players for a complete roster. Glued and stapled together rosters are for the mid majors bottom feeders.
Moving forward, the staff should work to develop Mayer.

Pretty amazing that if we have a losing season, it'll be the first since the turnaround like 11 years ago? I see some good things, but it'll take a year or two.

Not giving up just yet on our conference chances. TT is the only team I would bet money on.

Good insight and a thorough examination of our current team, bunation. I enjoyed reading it and agree with your summation.

Along with "good chemistry can defeat good talent" ?, could add: "It's not the x's and the o"s, it's the Jimmies and the Joes", and "recruiting is the lifeblood of any program".

Our major recruiting has been through transfers over the past three to four years.
Drew has a few years to fix this roster. He's built up enough leeway to dump a 20 loss season on us if he recovers the next season.
Make sure to stop and have a few Big Os before heading to the arena this season or bring your family to enjoy the gameday atmosphere. It would be a good time for the live Bear mascots to make an appearance pre games outside the arena for pictures.

Hopefully they'll be better next year. This is a patchwork roster right now. Drew's best teams almost always have a scorer at the point and that's not the case this season.

I think Teague adds that, but it sure would be nice to be in the running for a 5* guard or center. Either one of those dramatically changes the outlook.

They also lost to Lipscomb.

And agree, it will have to be a patient year for sure. I think one of the main pieces they are missing as stated before is a constant scoring PG. All of Drew's best teams had that cold as ice PG who could just drain it whenever we needed it and add that scoring factor we are missing. I think this team will grow up and that factor will show up eventually as they grow together, it is just going to be very bumpy and inconsistent. The team shows flashes of what they can be and hopefully they can build upon that as the season wears on. I think we're gonna steal a few and maybe even make a run of wins, it just won't be pretty.

We're going to need Drew to work the magic he found in that 2013-14 season. That was the best coaching job he's done here, IMO.

That's when we started 1-6 in conference play, then turned it around to get to 9-9 and NCAA tournament bubble status. Then we made it all the way to the Big 12 championship game and safely in the tournament as a 6 seed, eventually reaching the Sweet 16.

I think that's the kind of prayer we're needing this year.

This is true. I only see one guy on this year's roster that's a draft candidate.

Im new here, but how do we go from having a top 5 recruiting class and a good showing in the tourney to falling flat in recruiting and ending up in the nit? Is bball that fickle with regard to consistency in recruiting strength?

I always liked drew so im not knocking him, just wondering if mbb is different than wbb or cfb.

Baylor getting a new arena is like people in a bad marriage thinking that having a baby will save the marriage. A new arena won't improve the coaching.

Drew's coaching isn't that bad, honestly. There are better x's and o's guys, but he's done fine in that department. His offense gets clunky without certain pieces. He doesn't have those this year.
