I did not know this until about a year ago, but the Duke basketball program was actually above average before Coach K. I'd been under the impression that all of their accomplishments were under one coach.
Duke basketball had been to numerous Final Fours before he took over. They did not break through and win their first title until the early 1990's.
That's why if Duke is a blue blood so is UCONN. Both of them were basketball programs that had been above average for many years, and that won their first (of multiple) NCAA titles in the 90's.
There are people that think Coach Drew will end up being the next Coach K, and that Baylor basketball will be the new Duke of the Southwest.
The first time Coach Collen gets our Women's team back to the Final Four they will officially be a Blue Blood. They are pretty much already there.
