Iowa State ...
Is it just improvement from the players they already had or did they bring in some new talent ?

ASHLEY JOENS

"The highly touted freshman is playing great on offense, producing on defense and living up to the high hopes fans had for her when she came to Iowa State. In fact, she's one of the biggest reasons the No. 22 Cyclones are 13-2 on the season and 3-0 in Big 12 Conference play. The former Iowa City High star was named Miss Iowa Basketball and the state's Gatorade Player of the Year. Head coach Bill Fennelly wasted no time utilizing her, plugging Joens into his starting lineup and giving her the green light to shoot whenever she gets a good look.

Fennelly said it has helped the Bridget Carleton and Alexa Middleton, both seniors, have taken Joens under their wing, becoming mentors to the young star. Fennelly even sees a lot of similarities in Joens and Carleton, who had her share of ups and downs during her freshman season.

During Iowa State's 92-54 win over Texas Christian on Wednesday night, Joens matched a career high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field."

Quotes from Bill Fennelly

"She said to me, 'Coach, I get upset when I can't do something. And I said, 'Ash, you can do it, you just can't do it yet.'"

"We're challenging her to be a great basketball player not just stay on the wing and when Bridget (Carleton) throws it to you, shoot it. And she's embraced that. She gets it."

^^^ This Iowa St situation is not good!!!

92-54 over TCU after thrashing K St is arguably in Baylor territory if not higher, much higher

uh oh

They may be very underrated and with that freshman they could get stronger as season goes on

Good news is they may kill UT too

Bill has had a down couple of years but he has come roaring back... Now OU needs to step their game, nothing since the Paris sisters.

Excerpt
"UConn women's basketball lost for the third time in the last four years on Thursday night. The No. 8 Baylor Lady Bears knocked off the No. 1 Huskies, 68-57, giving Geno Auriemma his first regular season loss since 2014. Not a single player on the UConn roster had lost a game as a Husky until Thursday night.

The Huskies' last two losses took herculean efforts that involved overtime and incredible game-winning shots. Baylor won by 11 points and really wasn't threatened much in the second half.

5 things to watch for the 2018-19 season

Nov 8, 2018

# 1 Defensive improvement
"Going into last year's NCAA tournament, the Sooners ranked second-to-last in the Big 12 allowing 72 points per game. Their 3-point field goal percentage defense (35.4 percent) ranked last.

Strides on the defensive end are important, and on the inside, OU has few experienced post players to guard bigger teams.

# 2 Super sophomores
Second-year guards Shaina Pellington and Ana Llanusa were the Big 12's top freshmen a year ago. OU will rely heavily on them for leadership and production.

Llanusa's biggest offseason focus was defense. She committed 93 fouls, which was second on the team, but still averaged 12.6 points. Pellington averaged 13.1 points and has added a jumper to repertoire. She made 5 of 7 shots beyond the arc in OU's exhibition against Northeastern State after going 0 for 3 all last year.

#3 Madi Williams
The 6-foot freshman guard/forward from Fort Worth, Texas, had a quiet exhibition with five points in 19 minutes, but she was in the starting lineup. Williams was ESPN's No. 24 overall recruit and a McDonald's All-American last season and is expected to have an immediate impact.

"Physically as prepared for college basketball as maybe any freshman I've ever had," OU coach Sherri Coale said. "She is right now, when challenged, she's really good. When not challenged, she's not so good always She's got to learn how to every single possession, attack it. Regardless of the situation, the time, the score, the circumstance, the player, to attack it. If and when she figures that out she'll be one of the best to ever play here."

OU's freshman class is seven players deep and includes Tatum Veitenheimer, who started Monday and scored eight points off 4-of-11 shooting. Freshman guards Taylor Robertson and Jessi Murcer also logged significant time.

# 4 Sharp shooter
Robertson scored 25 points in a preseason scrimmage it wasn't a fluke. The 2017 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year shot 48 percent from 3-point range as a senior at McPherson High School and poured in 21 points off 7-of-12 shooting from behind the arc in OU's exhibition. Her long-range ability is critical after Gabbi Ortiz's graduation last year. Ortiz was the Sooners' top outside threat at 38 percent.

#5 Senior x-factors
Seniors Gileysa Penzo (guard) and Ijeoma Odimgbe (forward) won't chart huge statistics, but they'll play a critical role.

Penzo's passing ability and knowledge of the offense helped the Sooners get out of a rut in midseason last year. She had two games with 10 or more assists.

Odimgbe's shot-blocking and rebounding skills can add an active presence inside. She shot 52 percent from the field in 2017 and has tried to improve her offensive game.

"[The seniors] will be the important thing," Coale said, "because I've never had a team do extraordinary things if the seniors weren't extraordinary."

PLAYER INJURY

Jan 9, 2019

Senior shooting guard Katrina Pardee was carried off the floor early in the 4th quarter due to an ankle injury. She was injured coming down in the lane after scoring on a drive.

Pardee, who is one of the Mountaineers two main 3-point threats, had 14 points when she was injured. She recently eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career. She came back on crutches to watch the final minutes of the game on the Mountaineer bench. Carey doesn't know how long he'll be without her, but with a depleted roster any amount of time is too long.

"If it's even a high ankle sprain, it's not good," Carey said. "We'll be down to eight players for a while."
