Iowa State on road dominates Kansas State

"The Iowa State women's basketball team always has a pretty good idea of who its top scorers will be.

Kansas State did too, however, as Kansas State shut down Iowa State's Bridget Carleton and Emily Durr.

A trio of Cyclones picked them up, however, as Adriana Camber, Madison Wise and Meredith Burkhall poured in a combined 58 points in the Cyclones' 80-45 domination of the Wildcats on Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.

"We had a good game, came out from the start playing hard," Camber told the Cyclone Radio Network. "We knew they were going to play hard on Bridget (Carleton) and (Emily Durr), so we kind of had the game plan, if you're open, shoot it, so I did. As soon as you see the first one go in, it kind of goes from there."

The Cyclones (10-13, 4-8) led for 38 minutes, 47 seconds of game time in the blowout, unquestionably their best game of the season. Camber paced the Cyclones with 21 points, a career high, on 8-of-16 shooting. Burkhall had 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting with a career-high 13 rebounds, and Wise had 17 points, going 6 of 10 from the field and 5of 5 from behind the 3-point line.

"We wanted to come out with a fast start, and we moved the ball, and we made open shots," Burkhall said.

Her rebounding effort, Burkhall told the Cyclone Radio Network, came from a focus on the fundamentals.

"We've been working all week on just going and getting the ball with two hands and working with our scout team," she said. "And coach (Bill Fennelly) has been drilling us about go get up and get it with two hands, get it with two hands, so I think that's what all of us did and that's what I did today, just go and get it and outlet the ball and get up the floor."

The Cyclones were dominant in almost every category. They outshot the Wildcats 44.1 percent to 24.6 percent, outrebounded them 55-37 and had 25 assists to Kansas State's 12. ISU went 15 of 31 beyond the 3-point line and had 22 points in the paint without Bride Kennedy-Hopoate, who missed the game with a foot injury.

Kansas State scored just 16 points in the second half as the Cyclones buried buckets.

The Wildcats trimmed ISU's lead to four with two minutes left in the first half, but the Cyclones quickly built that lead back to nine at 38-29 at halftime. Saturday, in short, belonged to the Cyclones.

And that's even with the Wildcats playing junk defenses designed to limit Carleton and Durr.

"I thought they both did a really good job of not forcing," Fennelly told the Cyclone Radio Network. "They both took about 12 and 11 shots and all of them were in rhythm and that's a good thing. They played the triangle and two so we just tried to use them as screeners and get people moving around."

Carleton finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Durr had nine points, 13 assists and no turnovers.

"One play led to another led to another," Fennelly said. "We chased (Kansas State) off the shots that we wanted them to shoot, we let people shoot that 'we said hey, let them shoot and get the rebound.' Overall it was as good a game as we could play."

TEXAS

Far left 6-3 Joyner Holmes (24) & Kristy Wallace (4)

January 28, 2018

"Joyner Holmes is listed as a sophomore guard-forward on the Texas roster. It's time to take 'guard' out of her job description. Karen Aston has plenty of guards at her disposal and most of them are pretty adept at knocking down jump shots, which isn't Holmes' long suit.

If that beatdown at Baylor taught us one thing
it's that the Horns could use some more size underneath.

The 25-point loss was a not-so-subtle reminder that a good big team will usually beat a good small team in the women's game, especially a smaller team that doesn't fully utilize its size. Baylor bigs Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox blitzed Texas for for 34 points and 21 rebounds that night, by the way.

Saturday's bounce-back 87-55 win over an outsized Iowa State team
was expected - maybe not by the record margin of victory but expected nonetheless. It also provided some evidence that the 6-foot-3 Holmes, who was held to three points and six rebounds in Waco, can make a much bigger impact as an interior player rather than out on the perimeter, where she has struggled with her jumper since she got here.

Her latest game was different in that she didn't settle for jumpers. She took the ball to the rack with great aggression and played with the energy this team could really use in the front court. Her first attempt came at the rim. She missed but it was a high-percentage attempt. Aston will take it.

Early in the second quarter, Texas actually ran a play for Holmes on the block
She made a sweet pass to Jatarie White, who missed, but the play was one that Texas should have been running for Holmes from the moment she walked on campus.

This wasn't the Holmes we saw in Waco
the one who was far too respectful of of the Baylor bigs.

Versus Iowa State, Holmes finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes her first double-double of the season. She provided a nice lift to posts Jatarie White and Audrey Ann Caron-Goudreau, who combined for 24 points and seven rebounds.

When asked about the emphasis on playing in the paint
Holmes said. "I think it's just recognizing our matchups. They had some smalls on us so it was taking advantage of our matchups and trying to score inside out and in the paint."

Translation: 'I went inside because I'm bigger than them.'

This is where Holmes must grow mentally as a player. She has to be tough enough to understand even if she is giving up height to someone like Brown or Cox, she is still tons more athletic than either one and can blow past them to the bucket. Yes she is a great passer with natural playmaking skills but she has to realize she's a much better fit as an interior presence in this offense.

That's where coaching comes in
Aston must impress upon her young charge to be more like Candace Parker and less like Diana Taurasi. She must implore the sophomore to do what's best for this team and that's play big. Holmes has likened herself to Kobe Bryant in the past but she is a poor outside shooter. She has the talent to develop a jumper in time. But for now, she should go into every game in attack mode This team needs her inside. Brooke McCarty, Ariel Atkins, Lashann Higgs, and Sug Sutton are plenty capable of handling backcourt duty.

"As I've said for the thousandth time, this is a process for Joyner," Aston said. "As she goes along, every day is going to feel better for her. At some point she will feel comfortable again and she will get back to the motor running all the time and physical play and not shying from contact and all of that."

As she matures, Holmes will grow into her skill set and take full advantage of her natural gifts. She made it look easy against the Cyclones and it was. It won't be so simple when Baylor visits Austin in three weeks but she shouldn't make it easy on Baylor either. Not too long ago, she scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a win at Baylor. That same player averaged 12 points and eight rebounds over her freshman season.

While a suspension has hindered her development
- her fault all the way - there is plenty of time to make her stamp on a team that can potentially make it to a Final Four.

"If this was the moment that sort of flipped the light back on for her, that's great but I think we also need to understand there will be some moments where she's trying to get a feel and get timing," Aston said. "I think it's two-fold. It's a mentality for her and for me it's maybe just some recognition that there's certain things that we can do offensively that will put her in a place where she's comfortable."

Better put, it's time for her play in a place where she has been uncomfortable for much of her college career."

I am not sure it is correct to say, as the above author did, that Holmes is more athletic than Brown or Cox. Maybe she has quicker foot speed, but that is only one element of athleticism.

Usually Holmes just runs into the post players, not around them. I swear she averaged at least 2 charges per game when I watched her play last year. Just hold your ground and let her come to you.

At the end of last season many beat writers were projecting Holmes a possible national POY, and THE piece of the UT puzzle that would lead the lady whorns to flip with BU for the next three years.

Her layoff REALLY took some of her game away. Maybe next year she'll have most of her game back. At her best, she IS one of the best in the nation because of her athleticism in handling the ball AND being able to go underneath and score.

"This is a conference where if you aren't ready to go, it can get out of reach really quick. I know a very similar thing happened to Texas at Baylor where they got it kind of handed to them, and it happened to us today. We've got choices now in how we respond to it, and I loved how we responded in the second half. We played a lot more inspired and competitive basketball."

What happened to TCU?

"This is a disappointing loss for sure for our team. It's hard to sweep teams in our conference, and this time of the year every single possession is so important. You have to have a sense of urgency, especially when you're playing against a team that shoots the three as well as Iowa State is right now."
-- TCU head coach Raegan Pebley

- Jamie Plunkett, frogsowar,com, 15 Feb 2018

******************

"TCU women's basketball erased a second-half deficit, but fell just short in the end of a 66-63 loss to Iowa State at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night.

TCU (16-9, 7-7) was down by 11 points late in the third quarter, but quickly bounced back to take a lead less than three minutes into the fourth. An Iowa State (11-14, 5-9) 7-0 run then gave the Cyclones a lead TCU never retook. The Frogs had the final possession down by three points, but missed two 3-pointers.

Dakota Vann led the Frogs with 16 points, a TCU career-best, including 3-of-3 from long range. Amy Okonkwo added 14 points and Amber Ramirez had 10. Jayde Woods dished a career-high eight assists with no turnovers.

Bridget Carleton led the Cyclones with 26 points, despite TCU holding her scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the game.

TCU went scoreless for the final 3:42 of the first half and the first 2:23 of the second half as Iowa State built a lead. The Frogs made just 1-of-8 to start the third period and the Iowa State lead grew to as big as 11 points, 45-34, with 2:52 to go in the third.

The Frogs were down by eight points entering the fourth quarter, but needed less than two minutes to take the lead as Ramirez capped a Kianna Ray steal with a 3-pointer that put TCU up, 48-47, with 8:05 to go in the game.

Iowa State eventually retook an eight-point lead, 62-54, with 3:19 remaining. A Lauren Heard free throw with 37.2 seconds remaining got TCU within two, 65-63, before Adrianna Camber matched it with a free throw with 23.1 seconds remaining.

That gave TCU one final possession. Ramirez got a good look at a 3-pointer that rimmed out, but Okonkwo got the offensive rebound with less than 10 seconds remaining. TCU's second 3-point attempt of the possession, this one by Jayde Woods, also missed and the Frogs fell, 66-63."
