SHERRI COALE'S SON PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT COACH

September 13, 2018

"Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale announced two new staff roles for the upcoming season on Thursday. Assistant coach Jan Ross has been elevated to the newly created role of chief of staff while player development specialist Colton Coale will transition to assistant coach.

"In light of the rapidly changing climate in collegiate athletics, it is becoming more critical than ever to adapt to the needs of our student-athletes while providing extraordinary mentorship and leadership," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "Jan's wealth of experience, as well as her skill set, positions her to immediately and effectively connect the dots for our student-athletes while constantly steering programs and processes that govern the full circle of their development."

In her role as chief of staff, Ross will oversee academic progress for students-athletes, break down film of OU's practices and opponents, assist OU's coaching staff with various initiatives and work in an outreach role with the community and local high school coaches. Since arriving in Norman prior to the 1996-97 season, Ross has monitored the academic progress of OU's players, helping the Sooners to a team GPA of 3.0 or better in 37 of the last 44 semesters. On the court, she has been a part of 481 wins, three Final Fours, 10 Big 12 titles and 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

"Oklahoma women's basketball has been a part of my heart and soul for 22 years and it always will be," Ross stated. "While I have decided that this is the right time for me to come off the recruiting trail, I am as passionate as ever about doing everything within my power to help our student athletes grow on and off the court. I am energized and excited about the new role I can play in helping our program pursue championships."

Colton Coale, who served as a graduate assistant with the Sooners from 2015-17, was OU's player development specialist during the 2017-18 season. As an assistant, Coale will work exclusively with the team's guards and coordinate offensive gameplans. He graduated with his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2015, while earning his Master's degree in 2017.

"I am honored and excited about the opportunity to recruit and train players as a full-time assistant coach. I have been incredibly blessed to grow up learning from this amazing staff of coaches." Colton Coale said.

FORMER PLAYER
Jhasmin Player

August 28, 2018

Head Coach Charity Elliott and the Loyola Marymount University program have finalized the team's 2018-19 coaching staff. Jhasmin Player joins the staff as an assistant coach.

Player graduated from Baylor University with a degree in speech communication in 2009 and was a four-year member for the Bears' basketball team, earning captain honors for her junior and senior seasons. Player guided Baylor to four NCAA tournament appearances and a 2009 Big 12 tournament championship. Individually, Player was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team in 2009 and also earned Big 12 All-Defensive Team and Second-Team All-Conference honors during her collegiate career.

She most recently worked at the University of Maine as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women's basketball team. She was in this role from 2016-18 and also worked as an assistant for the Black Bears from 2011-13 before returning to Poland for her second professional basketball stint. Player helped recruit in Maine's nine-member 2012 class which was ranked as the No. 36 class that year by Blue Star Basketball and produced a pair of America East regular season championships. She also spent the 2009 season in Portugal and 2010 season in Spain as part of her professional career.

"This position was really critical for us and I took my time to make sure that we found the right person," Coach Elliott said. "I'm thrilled to say that we hit a home run with Jhasmin Player. She has a history of excellence from her playing days at Baylor to her recruiting successes at Maine, particularly in the international scene. What stood out to me was her combination of confidence and humility. Our players are going to love the passion and experience she brings, and on the recruiting side, she will hit the ground running. We are so excited to welcome her to the bluff."

People constantly complain about the disparity in women's basketball but then comments like this are made when a top player decides on a school that's not in the big 5. When will people realize that there is so much more to deciding on a college beside their past success??

OPENING DAY OF PRACTICE

Sept 25, 2018

Oklahoma held its first official practice of the 2018-19 season Tuesday with a two-hour session inside Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners are taking advantage of an early start to their practice schedule as OU welcomes 7 newcomers to their roster for the upcoming season. Head coach Sherri Coale, who begins her 23rd season at OU, returns two starters from last year's squad that made the program's 19th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. With a roster that features 10 underclassmen, Coale emphasized how a good first day of practice starts off a new season on the right note.

Head coach Sherri Coale quotes
"I thought it was a really good day to start. This group is a bunch of learners. You tell them something once and they change it. We're able to do a lot of things because of that. This group wants to be coached and that's good to see early on."

"Leading is doing the right thing at any given moment in time. We'll have a bunch of different leaders during the day or during the season and we've got a lot of candidates. That's not exclusive. Anyone can step up and take that role.

"Today was about being a good teammate, communicating all the time and doing everything with a sense of urgency. That's the ground floor. If we can do that, then we've got a chance to do a lot of other things."

Sophomore guard Shaina Pellington quotes
"It was a good of practice. I thought we did a really good job taking what we've done over the summer and implementing them today. The key for us was making an impact today when we were on the court and helping communicate with each other when we weren't on the court. I thought we did a good job of that today."

"We're a young team, but everyone has a leadership role on this team. We're super athletic and we can all run. That's something we need to take advantage of during this season."
