Other Notes

Forward Madison Bartley (Sr.) announced on Friday that she has medically retired from basketball. Bartley struggled with back injuries and played in 20 games last season. Those same back injuries played a role leading up to and throughout this season.

Top Quotes

Head coach Nicki Collen on playing back-to-back ranked opponents (No. 1 UCLA, No. 9 TCU):

  • “It’s about scouting report prep and understanding your strengths. The teams that win in March know who they are and do what they do better than the team they are playing. When you’re matching up against really, really good teams, you have to do a better job of executing than they do on both sides of the ball. … I think it comes down to being prepared and making the right plays and the plays that work for you.”

Head coach Nicki Collen on what Baylor learned from playing No. 1 UCLA:

  • “When we were trying to do too much in the first half, it was all coming from a good place of trying to play fast and get to the rim before Lauren [Betts] got down the floor, but we were taking our last dribble at the 3-point line and launching our bodies and the ball at the basket. We had no chance to make those shots. In the second half, we did a really good job, but we had kids miss shots that they normally make. I thought our execution was considerably better, but we can’t wait until the second half to know what will need to work.”

Head coach Nicki Collen on losing forward Madison Bartley (Sr.) for the season:

  • “We’re always going to prioritize someone’s health long-term rather than short-term. … Ultimately, it’s about Madison being able to be a teacher and a mom and move and function and not tweak her back to where she’s not able to walk for days. It was the best decision for her and her long-term health. We’ve dealt with Madison’s injuries in the past. I was so afraid of this moment that I hesitated to play her more in November for fear of this. This is just how the world works. Right when I said I needed to play her, she’s making us better — this happened. … I’m disappointed for her. She certainly had an amazing career at Belmont and never got her feet wet here because of dealing with injuries. Madison is an elite human and an elite representative of Baylor. She’s a servant leader and cares about young people. Her faith is super strong.”

Guard Yaya Felder (Sr.) on Kayla Nelms (Fr.) getting significant minutes in recent games:

  • “Her confidence is definitely up there. At first, she wasn’t really talking. Now, she’s really getting the hang of it and I can see her confidence keep building every single game. I’m proud of her.”

Forward Kayla Nelms (Fr.) on stepping up in the absence of Madison Bartley (Sr.), who announced on Friday that she’s medically retiring from basketball:

  • “You need to stay ready at all times. No matter if she was playing or not, you have to stay ready for when your name is called to go on the court.”

Valiant comeback effort. We just got too far behind to make it all the way up.

I guess our penance for finally beating TCU for the first time in the 2020s in football is that we had to sacrifice men's and women's basketball to losses.

I love the way we can fight and claw back we have seen this in multiple games this season l. We would win a lot of games if we didn't have the slow starts.

First loss since 1990, when Pam Bowers went 4-23 on the season.

Love the fight and the comeback. But unless Abraham and Helms can make some great strides between now and the end of February, I don't see us going far in the tournament. Even with Vonleh hitting on all cylinders (which she wasn't today), we just don't have the depth in the middle to compete with the elite teams.

I'm gonna show my age here but I was a senior at Baylor the last time they beat us.

Also broke a 36 game win streak in the series, which was tied with the longest win streak over an opponent with the 36 game streak over KSt from 2004 until 2022.

Holy moly. Didn't realize that Sedona Prince turns 25 in less than four months. She's been in college for SEVEN years!

Does anyone know why Abraham will get a rebound at the basket, and instead of going back up she will kick it out? I like her and think she has a future with BU, but at that size she should automatically go back up.

We've competed with them we just haven't been able to beat them. We can't have a cold streak at the beginning of a game or the start of the 3rd quarter and then have to play even or better to overcome it. And we can't miss free throws when we are in the middle of a possible run where we don't get the "and-one".

Is it just a Baylor thing....men..women...doesn't matter. Poor starts and missed free throws in critical times.

Also didn't see it mentioned, but I counted twice from when I think the ref would have or should have started counting, and I got to six seconds on the last throw-in for TCU when they didn't have a time out before the ball was released from the in-bounder. It should have been Baylor ball with 15 or so seconds and a 3 point game.

I like the fight. But, like you said, you can't beat a top team on the road missing that many layups. Continues to be a problem.
Actually some of those probably should not have been taken because they are anticipating a block whether one is coming or not and altering the shot ever so slightly because of the height and length they know is lurking. CNC talked about it on her coaches show this week. If they are going to have to alter their shot they just need to kick out.

Well I haven't watched a game this year. Just checking on the score, etc. Not looking too good. Middle of the pack year I guess.

Losing to the best team in the conference on their home floor makes BU "middle of the pack"?
Oh, come on Golf, don't spoil his agenda. If Lee doesn't play when we play KSU, we have a legitimate chance to run the table from this point. We get WVU, ISU and TCU at home. Now, I wouldn't go out and expect it because there is too much parity in the conference, but the team is capable. We do play CO up there, so that is one potential speed bump.

The team has shown they can play long stretches with two top 10 teams, but we can't have these slow starts. Man I hope we get some dead-eye shooters for next season....and of course some height in the middle.

I think it is because she doesn't shoot well. She misses a lot of layups. Definitely needs to work on that part of her game.

Trying putbacks was a real bad idea at UCLA and Prince is the BEST SHOT BLOCKER in WBB - better than Betts !!! The strategy is to rebound and kick it out and pass the ball around the perimeter to try and catch Prince out of position for another rim attack or a pull up in the lane or pass to an open shooter who has a good look.
Since Prince plays almost 40 minutes the strategy was to make her work hard every second she was on defense. Second chance and possibly third chance opportunities is way more preferable than a blocked shot creating momentum or worse triggering a fast break.

Baylor women's coach when I was in school 40 years ago.

Last coach to lose to TCU...we had a 35 year 37 game winning streak.

Yeah, fourth in the conference presently. Yes I know there is 16, but some never have been good. The days of expected wins and disappointments when we didn't are gone. BU used to be a power to deal with, now… just a participant. Honestly, I've lost interest

Anybody that expects Baylor or any other WBB team without an elite coach to have the dominance that Baylor had up until 2021-2022 is delusional or just wants to push an agenda. You don't lose an elite coach (and there are only 3 left that match that description) and expect to remain dominant as you were. Stanford is the best current example. In the latest bracketology I saw, Stanford is not even projected to be in the tournament.

I have laid out the case why history shows the above to be true and why it is even more solid a conclusion as parity has greatly increased in the sport. I have stated it in detail in past threads and won't take anyone's time to post it here again. There are only 3 teams at this point that have a recognized elite coach and two of them are on the clock because of their age and health scares. There are no more recognized elite coaches other than them that have the skins to backup such a claim. Essentially leveling the recruiting playing field where the coach's name (and name only) is no longer an overriding consideration for a recruit.

Frankly considering how the rug was completely pulled out from under this program, it should have completely collapsed especially with the timing of the change and no advance warning with time to prepare for it. And that was the fear had Smith, Egbo and Bickel transferred out. But they stayed and bought us some time. We had a good curtain, but there was nothing of volume behind it on which to rebuild. Fortunately Buggs and Bella came along.

I believe we will see FFs and a possible NC at some point and compete for conference championships every year. I have no expectations or requirements that we win multiple NCs or string together multiple Big XII championships to have positive feelings toward the program. It just doesn't work that way any longer. The day of WBB being ruled by a handful of teams nationally and one team dominating a conference is currently progressing to go the way of the dinosaur.

In the summer of 2021 we came as close to a complete blow-up of a program as one could get. Some questioned whether or not we could even field a scholarship team for the 21-22 season. Despite getting frustrated and disappointed from time to time, I firmly believe that we are doing things to build the Baylor brand back up. The challenge for the coaches is to plant that belief on the recruiting trail. How NIL factors into that I have no idea as I have no data on which to form an opinion. I just know that I have seen improvement in our program every year since that black summer of 2021.

I hope and expect that improvement to continue, but I am not going to judge that improvement and have expectations of what we were blessed to have enjoyed for almost two decades. to be the measuring stick of how I look at this program today. The WBB world has changed and if you can't see that, and understand what it does to a program to lose an elite coach, perhaps you should just not watch anymore because Baylor nor likely any other team is going to see that kind of success once those 3 coaches are gone.
