Top Quotes

Head coach Nicki Collen on the opportunity to win a Big 12 regular season title:

  • “I think this sets up to be a really big game for our league and for both teams on national TV. It should be a cool environment. I think we gotta keep the main thing the main thing, and that’s preparing for TCU and knowing that they stand in the way of a goal of ours, and certainly, it’s a goal of theirs.”

Head coach Nicki Collen gives an injury update on Bella Fontleroy (Jr.):

  • “She did not practice on Wednesday, so we’ll have a better gauge today in practice of where she’s at.”

Guard Sarah Andrews (Sr.) on whether you can script a better end to the regular season:

  • “It’s God’s plan. We were probably the underdog all season. I think TCU should be a little more nervous than us because it’s a lot of pressure on them. They are ranked higher than us, and we’re the underdog going into this game.”

I think it is a real sport but be mindful that there are fewer colleges competing for championships.

There's over 350 D1 woman's basketball teams and like 60 Acrobatic/tumbling teams. Quite literally an Apples to Oranges comparison

Until someone else wins three National Championships, Kim is the best coach Baylor has ever had in any sport.

The other Coach Mulkey, Felecia, says hello. She has 9 nattys in Acrobatics & Tumbling at Baylor. And if you don't think A&T is a real sport, watch those folks one time. They are superb, highly disciplined athletes.
Let me amend my statement to, "Kim is the best coach Baylor has ever had in any major sport."

I don't consider cheer and tumbling, figure skating, or gymnastics to be "sports" but demonstrations.
All of them take athleticism and intense training, but when you have to wait until judges hold up a card to decide who won, it's more like a beauty contest, IMO.

And until it was pointed out to me on this board that Baylor had won championships in acrobatics and tumbling, I was totally unaware.

There may be a fan base for acrobatics and tumbling and all of that other stuff, but I'm not in it.

But everyone can follow whatever they wish and have an opinion.
"As a businessman, Jerry is an absolute genius, but it’s safe to say he’s been exposed as a football idiot. That doesn’t make him a bad person, but he insists upon using his expertise in an area where he has none. We’ve seen the results of that for about 30 years now."

I agree. I completely respect the abilities that the athletes have to do what they do. But I think there are some things that qualify as a competition but not a sport: when the winner is chosen subjectively by a panel of judges, I personally do not consider it a sport. I say this with full awareness that it would exclude several "sports" as defined by the Olympics and that I am almost certainly in the minority for it.

Athletic competitions and sports are different in my view. Swimming is a sport, diving is a competition. Hockey is a sport, figure skating is a competition. I agree there is a difference. When you have to wait for a judge to tell you who won, it is not a true sport to me.

Hmmm.

So what about boxing?

Is that not a sport?

Enough of this. Mods lock this up.

I have to admit I have never watched a boxing match start to finish. I know it CAN be won objectively in the form of a KO or TKO. When that does not happen, what is the criteria for winning? Is it a clear method like the boxer who landed the most blows wins? Or is it another where judges revert to writing down their personal scores?
