Don't look at the Box Score unless you want to cry

Buggs: 3 for 12
Fontleroy: 2 for 8
Van Gytenbeek: 1 for 8
Johnson: 2 for 7

Deng was 1 for 1, Abraham was 2 for 4, Johnson was 2 for 5, and Scott was 7 for 18.
Team shot 31.7% from field, 20% from 3, 75% from FT line.
19 turnovers.

Only thing that isn't cringe worthy was D.

Duke shot 29% from field, 21.1% from 3, and 61.5% from FT line.
Baylor only recorded 14 fouls to Duke's 19.
Baylor allowed 19 offensive boards (really bad) but got 20 (really good).

D other than rebounding was solid.

Duke bench recorded 57 minutes. Baylor bench played only 46 minutes……way too little and not sustainable over a season. Pemberton had 1 minute and Deng had 6. HUGELY disappointing.

People thought production at the 5 was the limiting factor. Nope.
Wings were bad and PG (other than Scott sliding over) was disastrous.

The box score numbers that matter the most ----we have 58 points to their 52 .

The season is young. We have things to work on. This was a big game for both and the adrenaline rush had to be fairly strong.

I'll take an ugly win any day over playing close to perfection and losing.

It was a really good game for our Lady Bears to win! Anytime you knock off a top 10 (6) team that is a good thing for the program.

It's a Win, a huge Win actually. That should be the focus, not how ugly or pretty it was. That and how the team kept at it, kept fighting, kept trying despite not having their A game (or B game). They started bad, got down 7-0, and couldn't hit a shot to save their lives. But from that point on they beat the #7 ranked team 58-45. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me.

Totally agree! I dont understand why some people look at everything as negative. If they win complain.if they loose complain.

Apparently it is OK to celebrate an ugly win, even call it an ugly win, but not OK to point out the specifics of the ugliness of the win.

Have any of you ever watched a top coach's postgame comments about team shortcomings? That scenario is basically every top coach after every ugly win.

We won but we sure have a ton to work on.
Shoot the ball well, comment on rebounding.
Rebound well, comment on P&R defense.
Defend well, comment on inbounds plays.
And so on and so on and so on………welcome to sports commentary since the beginning of time.

Yes, the stats are not great but we played well enough to beat the # 7 team in the country. We won a game on national television that absolutely no one gave us a chance to win. This is a signature win for this team and I am really excited about it! It is first game of season with a lot of new players. The stats will improve but I will take a win over excellent stats every time!

Happy for the win but……and a huge but……

your comment…….."stats are not great".
my thought………..three Senior starters shooting a combined 6 for 28 would need to climb upward about ten levels to reach "not great". 21% over 28 shots (decent sample size) is really bad.

I think this whole thread is based on one game......and the first game of the season where a bunch of "strangers" are playing in a meaningful game for the first time. Just about every team has games like this from time to time, even if not considering the quality of the defense you are going against.

If it becomes standard, yes, that is a problem. But that is not yet the case. It was a great win. That is all that should matter at this point.

Despite all that - a W.....lots of talent for a potential Elite 8 run...

AP makes some helpful observations. No need to pounce. He is a BU fan, a coach NC fan. AP in an odd way I''m encouraged that we shot so poorly and still beat a top 10 team. I thought Abraham look like she belonged, she looked comfortable. The new big looks very athletic. Scott hustles. We couldn't buy a three, but played defense well enough to win. And we controlled a very talented player on the duke team; she had her moments, but was NOT unstoppable.

This is the first game of the season.. every team that didnt play the homeschool college for the blind and deaf, will have growing pains. This victory for the bears is massive. We literally beat the #7 team in the country and an elite 8 team last year. Duke had 4 of 5 returning starters.... this was a huge win for the bears! They have a legit shot at winning the big 12, assumimg taliah stays healthy

I look at it this way. We won with subpar games from most of our top players and still won. Very happy with the D mostly. We have come a long way and can win games vs good teams when offense is off. We will shoot better but the D can carry us.

I was ok with Jana at PG. This was her 1st game back and had a fairly rough 2nd half but she was fine but not flashy 1st half and had a number of inside passes for shots at the rim that were just missed. She was the best passing over the top feeding the post. Has to watch the bounce pass inside as 1 or 2 were stolen. Shooting was rough but she hit the 3 to give us a 3 score lead late and had no hesitation stepping up and making that shot late despite her prior misses. Taliah obviously the star. Marcayla looked very comfortable and confident. Liked what I saw from her today although her outside shooting was a little rougher than I thought. Very pleased with our bigs today. We finally have rim protection. I was hoping to see more Yuting and Kiera today but no room to complain with a win. Our offense has a lot of potential and our D will keep us in games til our O comes around and I think in the future we will potentially be very good in both. Way to go Bears! Very happy with the effort today. Sic'Em!!

The JVG playing PG issues:

1) she is tiny. Like times past, whenever Duke was able to get her switched to a larger player on D they immediately dove that player to the bucket. Baylor had to double down. Duke then easily swung the ball on the perimeter to an open shooter. Fortunately, Duke shooting was bad. Future opponents will hit open 3s.

2) she has no burst with the dribble. On 2-3 occasions JVG tried the Jada Walker burst and scoop on the left side to beat the help shotblocker. Walker routinely had success. JVG was blocked easily every time. It was ugly.

3) she is slow with the dribble. Whenever Duke ball pressured her in backcourt, she took forever to advance the ball and initiate offense. Numerous times Baylor began initiating half court offense at 15 or 16 seconds remaining on the shot clock. Not surprisingly, it generally lead to poor shots late in the clock and terrible…….really terrible….offensive efficiency.

4) assist to turnover ratio was terrible. 4 assists, 3 turnovers. Coaches want 3 or more to 1 and anything below 2 to 1 is really bad.

5) shooting…….1 for 8……yikes

6) guess why the D shifted to zone

7) JVG subs out Baylor has 4 points, subs in Baylor has 9, subs out Baylor has 17, subs out Baylor reaches 29 at half, plays entire 3rd quarter and Baylor reaches 43, subs out Baylor reaches 49, subs in and Baylor reaches 54, subs out and Baylor reaches 56, subs in and Baylor reaches 58.
JVG plays 27 minutes and Baylor scores 37 points, JVG on bench for 13 minutes and Baylor scores 21.
That equals 1.37 ppm with her, 1.62 ppm without her on court.
Think ppp is different? Nope.
On court = .63 (rounding up), off court .66 (rounding up).
Every scoring metric has Baylor better when she was on bench.

D? 35 with her on court (27 minutes) and 17 with her off (13 minutes).

Stats aren't opinions. They speak cold hard truth.
But the eyeball test is equally bad.

Don't believe it?
Rewatch game.
See the shots given up when on v off court……
See the shots taken when on v off court
Watch the shot clock to see the starting point for half court O initiation
Watch that drive and scoop
Watch the open 3s

Again, tape doesn't lie. It shows what it shows.

Great to get the win and lots of coaching points for CNC to have for her team to improve. Keep playing stingy D and hope the O improves with better shooting.
