WBB: Chou granted release to transfer

WACO, Texas – Baylor sophomore Natalie Chou has been granted a release and will transfer, Baylor head women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey announced Monday.

Chou appeared in 64 games with 21 starts in two seasons for the Lady Bears. She averaged 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game this year, and 4.7 points. 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest as a freshman.

The Lady Bears welcome in the top-ranked recruiting class of five next fall, including forward Caitlin Bickle, forward Aquira DeCosta, center Queen Egbo, forward NaLyssa Smith and guard Honesty Scott-Grayson.

Agree with BUbacker. Hate to see Natalie go, wish her the best, and think she is probably undervalued by many on this thread. Natalie played minutes as a Frosh on a very deep and talented team, and she started as a Sophomore. No question she would have been in our core rotation moving forward, she's an excellent BB player.

I'd love to know why she's leaving, but we may never know why and I can accept that we should accept the desire for privacy from a 20 year old college kid. There's a long list of potential reasons for transfer. Perhaps the program is not a good fit for her style of play, perhaps it's not a good fit with coaches, perhaps it's personal reasons, perhaps she wants to be closer to home, perhaps it's something on the academic side and she wants or needs what another school offers. Who knows. Fun to speculate, but not productive.

Natalie, thank you for your effort during your time at Baylor. We will miss you. Best of luck in your future BB career, and in your life.

Fuzzy,

In defense of BUBackerinET, I think you may have misread or misinterpreted exactly what was said. To quote,

"appears to me that we have a lot of players (all sports) who have failed to learn anything about patience, or being a team player. This is not a slam on Chou or any other specific player"

It seems pretty obvious to me that the writer was making a general statement about all players (not just BU) in all sports, not having the patience, or wanting to put the team first in today's sports world.

I mean, I don't know how many more disclaimers Backer could have put in there to make it more clear he wasn't singling out any one person, and especially not Chou.

I think the premise for the statement is 100% accurate. People transferring out of programs right and left to seek opportunities elsewhere for whatever reason. And, in more than a few occasions. it absolutely is the result of caring only about their own individual goals - which, by definition, likely means that person is not being a team player.

I certainly wouldn't make any more out of what was said than that simple fact...

If anyone in this thread understands Michelle Wie's parents' influence on her career and decision making, then you would understand the whole Natalie Chou situation.


Also, 5 stars, no matter the sport, all think they are destined to be the next Player of the Century in their sport. Schools then validate that thinking by recruiting them in a manner that implies the student athlete will achieve that goal if they come to X school. Bama and Ohio St have a swinging door of 5 star recruits coming in and transferring out every year. UNC, Duke, Louisville, Kentucky, etc.in mens basketball....still have it, although to a lesser extent today since the 1 and done allows complete turnover of starting rosters that gives the disappointing 5 stars hope they will crack the starting 5 next year. UConn women experiences high transfer rates.


And, now that Kim is bringing in 5 stars you can be assured we will see this trend. Anyone who thinks all of the 2018 class will all be here 4 years is setting themselves up for a huge disappointment,

I first saw Natalie when she played on the USA World Championship 16andUnder team that featured Lauren Cox in the post and Joyner Holmes at the PF position. Cox was voted the MVP of the Tournament. Natalie did not start but played off of the bench, and even then showed a smooth, disciplined game and a good three point shot. She was ranked #8 in her class and deserved that ranking based upon her body of work to that point.

When she came to Baylor I had some reservations about her ability to play the SG position effectively, but she always seemed to me to be a natural for the SF slot. Mulkey played her at both positions, of course, but the presence of Cohen made it difficult to log as many minutes at the SF position as she otherwise would have had.
I thought it likely that she would have been the starter at the SF slot, at least initially this year, so her transfer came as a mild surprise.

The logjam at that position meant that her minutes might not be of the quantity that she preferred, or there might have been other reasons for her decision. Her injury clearly set her back this past year and the influx of new talent probably put her on notice that the competition for minutes would be fierce. She had some games when her shot was dropping, others when it simply was not there for her, but she was a solid defender at the SF position and capable of scoring in double figures on a regular basis. I think that she will be an asset for any program that is fortunate enough to secure her services, and I wish her the best.

Been unable to respond for several days. Couldn't have said it better myself, BB. Correct on all points. Not all but many feel like their "time" is the minute they step on campus. CKM is just not that kind of coach, and as long as she is here, which I hope is a very long time to come, BU will not be that kind of program.

I think that Chou will be effective for a team that she is the main guy(gal). Otherwise she may develop
the same doubts she had here. After watching her for a couple of years, she had some brilliant play
making efforts but then there were so many times I was shaking my head thinking this type of play is
not going to work for Coach.

Ought to be a program that has most of the pieces but need a solid wing. I have not checked on A&M in this regard, but if they needed a wing, her mother would still be able to attend the home games.

I would follow UCLA and the Ivy League colleges (Princeton, Harvard) as possibilities. I hesitate to put Stanford on the list due to lack of roster openings and historical resistance to transfers.

I think academics will play a role...also where she feels she will play a role...I don't think she necessarily believes she has to play for someone who will be considered a top ten type program.

If I had the money to do so, I'd put it on Princeton. No inside information, just seems like a natural fit for what she appears to be looking for...

IF it ends up UCLA
UCLA seems like a good fit for Natalie. It checks so may items on her life-goals list. Additionally, UCLA has just placed 2 players in the 2018 WNBA draft. The program is getting steady evaluation by WNBA scouts.

We seem to live in a time when people believe that it is ok to redefine terms to suit their personal perspectives. I think the definition of "team player" as proposed by some of the previous posters is unfair. In essence a team player is one that does what is in the best interests of the team. It does not imply that you have to be committed to one team, such as committing yourself to ride the bench to be available in case of injury or other unlikely scenario's. Chou was a highly recruited player who's expectations were certainly not to ride the bench. It does not make her not a team player if she wants to go to a different team. She would only qualify as a non team player if she was disruptive, played ball hog or displayed any other behavior, while on the team, that was not in the teams best interests. The definition proposed by a previous poster seems purely from the perspective of a fan whose paramount interest is towards the program, but does not reflect a true objective perspective as to what a team player actually is.

While that definition of " non team player" did not specifically name Chou, it was obviously directed at her decision to transfer, since it was in response to Chou's transferring on a thread about her leaving. They were implying that Chou showed a lack of patience. Well it's not like she came in as a bench player who was waiting for the players in front of her to graduate, or an opportunity to show what she can do. Her opportunities were diminishing not increasing. If the poster meant something different they should have explained in more detail. As it stands it implies that Chou, by leaving the program could then be defined as non team player.

Preacher, that would be a great thing - I simply do not see any way that could or will happen. As I have tried to illustrate in this thread to the consternation of some, playing for CKM is no picnic. She is tough, and demanding - just the way I like it - and her success in undeniable. In addition, she is loyal to her players, but only to the extent it will help her ladies win. She also expects and demands loyalty back from her players to her, and to their teammates. Players who lack patience will not thrive in her system. Natalie was injured the last part of last year. She didn't play as much as she wanted or expected. This recruiting class in very highly rated, and IMHO, she felt like she would be pushed for time again, even though healthy. In this particular situation, for me, perception is reality, and as much as I enjoyed watching her play, and wish she hadn't left, I believe that ship has sailed.
