Memories of a cold trip to Hartford, to watch the "Griner" team play UCONN. Was my first chance to see Odyssey's high arched 3 pt shot. When Griner got pretty well shut down, Odyssey took over, and danged near won the thing for us in the second half. We just didnt' turn her loose to shoot the three until the second half.
How did O look, slimecap? Is she meshing with the Sparks well?
Before the game, O was meshing well with her teammates during warmups. Word in the stands is that Candace Parker has opened up and is making O feel more welcome.
O's ankle looked good tonight. One time she just BLEW past Skylar in transition.
O was being aggressive towards the basket and she was beast-blocked twice going up. The first time she was monster-blocked by the South Carolina rookie Alisha Gray. It brought the Wings crowd to their feet roaring.
Parker was off-focus tonight. She was upset with the refs and her flow was just not there. Nneka was also not her usual self. Glory Johnson was like a helicopter around both of them, giving them fits. I believe it affected O's ability to assist. Also, Bae Bae Williams went out early with a knee injury and never returned to the game.
CP3 and Nneka also seemed distracted by Kayla Thornton & Ariel Powers (who always communicates directly with the crowd when she is on the court to get us to make noise). Powers is quite the spark plug.
O was the 2 starter with Chelsea Gray at the point. O received a nice reception from the crowd when she was introduced. And she did not get a lot of rancor from the crowd during her free throws.
Some fans wore Odyssey's Dallas Wings jersey from last year
The game was very physical and the refs did not slow the pace down by camping at the replay monitor. When Tiffany Bird is a ref she takes so long at the replay monitor that you could finish a box of popcorn ... just literally kills the rhythm of the game. Grrrrrr !
The score was close from beginning to end.
Very physical game. Lots of fun.
Heart, Wish you could have been there. We could have sung along together to DJ Khaled's "All I Do is Win Win Win" and "put our hands in the air" with the cute little baby sitting next to us.
Great write up, slimecap! I almost feel like I was there! I live far from Waco and Dallas, so only get to see a game or two for our Lady Bears per year, but I treasure those. O was my very favorite player. Then, Brittany and Nina. But I love each of our Lady Bears every year. I definitely would have enjoyed singing along and seeing the sweet baby. Thanks so much
"Odyssey Sims also had a breakout performance scoring 20 for the Sparks, something that came as no surprise to her teammates.
"I am proud of 'O'. She is adjusting well," Candace Parker commented on her relationship with Sims. "I think that starting also helps because we are able to move 'AB' a little bit to be our key defensive player on the other team and are able to put 'O' on the ball. She is playing amazing especially in transition. It is fun for me because when I find her she is able to slice the defense. I am really proud of her."
Four of the Los Angeles starters finished with double digits: Parker and Sims leading the pack, plus Ogwumike with 17 and Gray 11. It wasn't just a one-minded offense, the team effort showed on the Los Angeles' side of the wood.
"We individually know what we need to do and collectively as a team," said Sims. "We talk about it, we go over it and we try to make sure we execute what we talk about."
Odyssey Sims had her best game of the season, leading the LA Sparks to a 82-67 win tonight over the Phoenix Mercury.. O had 28 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and only one turnover.
In a game about a week ago, she scored 15 points, had 10 assists and no turnovers in a 115-106 double OT win.
Since fully recovering from her injury she has started every game for LA and now plays heads up defensively on the opponents Point Guard. A familiar scheme to Lady Bear fans.
I watched a replay of the Los Angeles vs Minnesota game on Sunday. Holly Rowe stated that Odyssey had foot surgery for a Plantar Plate Tear prior to the 2018 WNBA season start.
Odyssey was interviewed during halftime. Interviewer told Odyssey that she seemed much more confident this season. Odyssey said that she is feeling the flow more in her 2nd year with the Sparks.
Odyssey seems to have found her game and nitch as the Sparks off guard. She has always been more of a two than a one and with LA she is allowed to do what she does best. With her and Chelsea they form the best guard combination in the WNBA.

"The three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury today announced the signing of restricted free agent guard Odyssey Sims to an offer sheet. Because of Sims' status, Los Angeles has four days to match the offer.
Sims is a five-year WNBA veteran who has spent the last two seasons with the Sparks, and owns career averages of 12.8 points and 3.6 assists in 156 games. The 5-foot-8 guard was originally selected with the second overall pick by the Tulsa Shock of the 2014 WNBA Draft, where she went on to be named to the league's All-Rookie Team that season. Sims was a four-year standout at Baylor University where she played alongside Mercury center Brittney Griner for three seasons.
After coming within one win of a trip to the WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury return in 2019 in search of a league-record tying fourth WNBA title. Led by the All-Star trio of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix opens its title quest on May 25 at Seattle on ABC."
