WACO, Texas — After securing the No. 1 seed for the Oklahoma City Regional in the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, the No. 5/5 Baylor women’s basketball team is gearing up for the first round against No. 16 seed Texas Southern University Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT at the Ferrell Center.

The Lady Bears finished their regular season with a record of 30-3 and secured their second consecutive No. 1 seed and fifth in the last seven years. The bid to the tournament is Baylor’s 14th consecutive under head coach Kim Mulkey and 16th overall.

Under Mulkey, the Lady Bears have a 39-13 overall record in the NCAA Tournament, and have made appearances in three Finals Fours, two of which resulted in Championship Titles in 2005 and 2012.

The Texas Southern Tigers will be making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship after a regular season finish of 23-9. The Lady Bears and Lady Tigers have not met since 2011. Baylor won the contest 91-39.

Baylor senior forward Nina Davis is the only player in conference history to have four All-Big 12 Tournament Team selections, and this season is joined by junior guard Kristy Wallace and redshirt senior guard Alexis Prince.

Davis boasts a 57.0 career field goal percentage, while Wallace and Prince also both set records in the Big 12 Championships, with Wallace providing 15 assists against Kansas State, and Prince accumulating an 87.5 field goal percentage in the semifinals.

Immediately after the Lady Bears battle the Tigers, No. 8 seed LSU (20-11) will take on No. 9 seed University of California (19-13) at 8 p.m. also at the Ferrell Center.

The winners from the first round games will face off on Monday in the Ferrell Center, with the tip-off time still to be determined.

If the Lady Bears are victorious over Texas Southern, they will have to contend with either California or LSU.

A Baylor-Cal matchup would be the second meeting of the teams in the tournament, the first of which the Lady Bears were victors with a score of 75-56 in 2014.

On the other hand, Baylor and LSU have split four meetings when playing one another in the postseason tournament.

Baylor is 14-1 all time in first round games, and 11-3 in second round games.
