WACO, Texas – The No. 6/6 ranked Baylor women’s basketball team was selected as a No. 2 seed for the program’s 19th appearance in the NCAA Tournament Monday night. The Lady Bears (25-2) capped another solid season with their 12th Big 12 Regular Season Championship and an 11th Big 12 Championship Sunday. They were rewarded and will face No. 15 seed Jackson State, Sunday at 3 p.m. on ABC, in San Antonio at the Alamodome.

Baylor was selected as a part of the River Walk Region, which boasts No. 1 seed UConn. On the Lady Bears’ side of the bracket, Baylor will face JSU in round one, and if they advance, the winner of the No. 7 Virginia Tech and No. 10 Marquette, on Tuesday.

The Lady Bears’ No. 2 seed marks the 10th-straight NCAA Tournament that Baylor has been a No. 2 or better. Baylor will be gunning for its 12th-straight NCAA Sweet 16, its fifth Final Four appearance and fourth national championship.

The Lady Bears are led by junior power forward NaLyssa Smith who was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and most recently, the Big 12 Championship’s Most Outstanding Player. She is averaging 18.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per contest while shooting .543 from the floor. Smith received her first All-America recognition of the season last week when she was named ESPN.com All-American First Team.

Her supporting cast is a great one with three other players averaging double-figures and all were all-conference honorees by the Big 12. DiJonai Carrington, the league’s Sixth Person and Newcomer of the Year, averages 13.5 points per game. Moon Ursin is having a career year as a senior at 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest while Queen Egbo may be one of the hottest players in the country averaging 11.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

Couple that with one of the biggest defensive threats in nation on the perimeter in DiDi Richards, and Baylor is poised to make a deep run.

But first, they’ll face Jackson State from the Southwest Athletic Conference. The Lady Tigers finished 18-5 overall with a 14-1 mark in conference play. Saturday, JSU beat Alabama State 67-66 in Birmingham, Ala. to secure the SWAC automatic qualifier.

Ticket information for fans can be found at: https://www.ncaatickets.com/championship/womens-final-four for all rounds with limited capacity. Sites for the first and second rounds include the Alamodome, UTSA Convovation Center and Bill Greehey Arena (St. Mary’s University) in San Antonio, the Frank Erwin Center (Texas) in Austin, and the University Events Center (Texas State) in San Marcos. All games, Sweet 16 and beyond, will be at the Alamodome.

The women were a #2 seed in 2005 - the year they won their first NCAA Tournament Championship. With a record of 25-2, this year, they have the same overall W/L record as Stanford, the overall #1 seed. We are about to see if they can have the same dominance as the other Baylor teams who won it all. They are still the reigning Champs .. until someone takes it away. Here's to doing all they can to reach the Final Four. Sicem, Ladies!

Tough bracket, but I like it. Control what you can, accept the assignment and go for it.

As jdkingbear said,we were a #2 seed in 2005,and it was magically delicious to beat three #1 seeds to win our first national championship!I was there for the finals, were you?

Yes, and we were also in Tempe for the regionals. There were not a lot of us, but we stayed in the team hotel and attended a couple of team functions (Sunday chapel, for example). And during the off day we enjoyed the company of those other Baylor fans that were part of the Simpson "tour". Greatest time we ever had following Baylor athletics. But of course, at the time, any........any positive experience with Baylor athletics was a blessing (and a miracle of sorts).

Yes that team saved Baylor athletics.
CKM was magnificent in how she handled the press trying to paint Baylor in a bad light.

Jackson St only played one opponent in the dance (SFA) and lost 88-58.

They only played two major conference opponents, neither of whom made the dance. Lost to MissSt 88-58 and Ole Miss 89-65.

CKM was magnificent in how she handled the press trying to paint Baylor in a bad light.
And Kim caused that year to happen. For all the bad things, jokes, and etc., thank goodness Tom Stanton got that right and was able to bring her to Baylor. I think it is hard to make an argument that Baylor would be where they are today without that one, single hire. Drew brought things along, but at the time he was just trying to survive here. Kim showed them it was possible and threw down the gauntlet to force accountability in the athletic department. And then things took off. This team was the launching pad and without it, there is no way, IMO, that we are where we are today.......arguably one of the top athletic programs in on-field and on-court overall success in the country the last decade.

I enjoy these 40-minute stats, but Jaden Owens was left off. Since so many on this board think she should've been playing more minutes I'm curious how she stacks up.

Yeah, she was the only player not to play at least 10 min per game they appeared in (she played 9.3)

That might fuel the fire a bit though in the tournament Kim historically sticks with 7-8 players. Jaden's assists-to-turnover ratio is outstanding and her Trey % is solid.
