I am new to this site. I've been overseas working for US Navy. Consequently, on many of these subjects, I am on outside looking in - so forgive my ignorance as I ask for some input.

Every day I read more and more about players (all sports) and the transfer portal. Can somebody give me a quick Cliff Note version on Baylor efforts, particularly MBB and FB, to engage in the free for all. I know Bears captured Ika from LSU but what else have we gained or is on the radar.

Something about snatching guys from one school to another seems a bit sleazy but I guess I am just old fashioned. Loyalty and commitment seem like things of the past

Thanks for any insight.

Cliff notes version...

In the past when players signed with a college and got on campus, they may have found that it wasn't as promised, or their major changed and their was no escape. NCAA gave them an escape by allowing the student to tell the school they wanted out, then enter the transfer portal where they could contact other colleges, and other college coaches could contact them. They could do this once as an undergraduate.

When they graduated with remaining eligibility, they could enter the transfer portal to transfer to a school that provided the postgrad degree that they wanted, even though they may have transferred as an undergraduate.

Coaches now find that they can fill in weaknesses this way, or completely rebuild a team as is now happening at Texas, Syracuse, So Carolina and Texas Tech, to name a few. In other words, one coaches trash is another coaches treasure.

Both Mulkey and Drew have filled in gaps by the transfer portal. Mulkey does it one player at a time for greatest need ( which has been at point guard) and Drew has really been successful getting transfers who are underclassmen and can redshirt to develop further.

The NCAA is being sued by people who believe that the definition of amateur is too broad. They believe that since schools financially benefit from sports and likenesses of players, that they players should be able to benefit. The NCAA believes that the suit will end the difficulties of transferring from different schools and sitting out. The transfer portal is here to stay. In the future, I believe that players will be able to transfer whenever they want with no penalty. Players will be able to financially benefit from their likeness in some undetermined way, I am sure.

Cliff Notes version:

-Mulkey just walked out on her team, and starts coaching at another school immediately.
-Under the old rules, players she recruited to Baylor would have to sit out a year after transferring.
-Why should she not have to sit out a year? Why was this one-sided after she sat in parents' homes and promised them she'd "be there for their kids for 4 years."

Cliff Notes version II:

-Your generation (my assumption as it sounds like you're presenting yourself as older), people believed kids should be subservient to adults.
-Modern day thought -- kids have just as much rights as adults.
-If Mulkey or any other coach can break a commitment and leave at the drop of a hat and be eligible at her new job, why can't a recruit do the same?

I'm not taking a position, just explaining the Cliff Notes version for you.

I think in the case of South Carolina we simply had an extremely talented Big fall into our laps and that was too good to turn down. Cardoso is the only transfer taken from the portal by the Gamecocks and with Aliyah Boston plus the group coming in with this recruiting class we didn't actually require any additions. But why look a gift horse in the mouth? The additional scholarship was sitting there unused and having Twin Towers is a problem most teams would love to have. No?
