Mason Greer, a graduate transfer first baseman from Missouri State, has committed to Mitch Thompson and the Baylor baseball program via the transfer portal, according to D1Baseball.

A native of Colleyville, Texas, the 6-foot-0, 215-pound slugger gives the Bears a much-needed jolt of power into the lineup and will likely be slotted as BU’s everyday first baseman, a position of need for Baylor entering the offseason.

Mason Greer played under Mitch Thompson in 2021 at McLennan.

Greer spent the 2021 season across town with Thompson at McLennan Community College, where he hit .322 with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs across 62 games.

Greer was an all-tournament selection at the 2021 JUCO World Series and anchored the Highlanders’ national championship-winning lineup before transferring to Missouri State for the following two seasons.

As a junior at Missouri State in 2022, Greer started 58 games, hit .312, collected 32 extra-base hits and won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament MVP.

In 2023, however, Greer struggled and started 26 games and hit just .235 with eight doubles and 13 RBIs.

The Colleyville native and son of former Texas Ranger, Rusty Greer, joins INF Jack Little (Wichita State) and RHP Patrick Hail (Lamar) as the three players to commit to Baylor through the portal this summer.

Baylor has added three players in the transfer portal this summer: Greer, INF Jack Little (Wichita State) and RHP Patrick Hail (Lamar).

While the transfer portal officially closed Thursday, July 13, that does not mean Thompson will not continue to make roster additions.

Currently, the 2024 squad includes 23 returnees, 13 incoming freshmen, six incoming JUCO additions and three portal additions. Assistant coach Zach Dillon stated that the staff wants 47-50 players competing for 40 spots in the fall.

As for the players leaving Waco, BU lost 12 players to the portal on this go around. The key losses include RHP Will Rigney (Jr., Texas), RHP Hambleton Oliver (Jr., West Virginia) and SS Kolby Branch (Fr., Georgia).
