NORMAN, Okla. – Baylor baseball (21-27, 9-16) extended its conference losing streak to nine games with a 19-7 loss to No. 18 Oklahoma (30-17, 19-6) in the series opener Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Baylor Athletics
RHP Mason Marriott (Jr.) surrendered eight earned runs, nine hits and five free passes across 4.1 frames.

Center fielder Ty Johnson (Jr.) led the Bears’ batting order with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate; he collected two RBIs, two runs and two doubles in the loss.

Despite Baylor jumping out to an early 6-2 lead, Oklahoma tied the game at six apiece in the fourth inning and didn’t look back. The Sooners scored nine unanswered runs in the later frames.

Coming off a career outing against TCU, right-handed pitcher Mason Marriott (Jr.) struggled mightily against the high-powered Sooners’ lineup, surrendering eight earned runs, nine hits and five free passes across 4.1 innings.

To open the ballgame, the Bears jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. With runners on the corners and no outs, first baseman Cole Posey (Sr.) continued his hot streak at the plate with an RBI single into right field.

With the bases juiced and no outs, catcher Cortlan Castle (Jr.) was hit by a pitch and second baseman Daniel Altman (Sr.) crushed an RBI sacrifice fly to the left-center field warning track.

In the second, Baylor extended its lead with its second three-spot of the evening. Johnson and Posey collected RBI base knocks in the frame, and Castle plated another run with a successful safety squeeze down the first base line. In his last four games, Castle has recorded six RBIs

What was once a four-run lead quickly became a 10-6 deficit to Oklahoma in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Altman could have ended the inning with a 4-6-3 double play but made a bad throw to pull Tyriq Kemp (Jr.) off the bag at shortstop and extend the frame.

In the sixth, Johnson blooped an RBI double into left field for his third hit of the contest. Oklahoma sealed the victory with a six-spot in the seventh with three runs off lefty RJ Ruais (Fr.) and three off veteran right-handed pitcher Drew Leach (RJr.).

Final: No. 18 Oklahoma 19, Baylor 7

W: Braden Davis (7-3) L: Mason Marriott (3-6)

POTG: Ty Johnson (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R)
