Today, I filed HB 3596, which is commonly known as the "Texas Independence Referendum Act," or TEXIT

If passed, it will place a referendum on the ballot during the next general election, allowing the people of Texas to vote on whether or not the State should investigate the possibility of Texas independence, and present potential plans to the Legislature.

The Texas Constitution is clear that all political power resides in the people. After decades of continuous abuse of our rights and liberties by the federal government, it is time to let the people of Texas make their voices heard.

On this 187th anniversary of the fall of the Alamo I'm proud to file this bill to let the people of Texas vote on the future of our State. Texas was born out of a desire for liberty and self-governance, and that desire continues to burn in the hearts of all Texans.

Such a waste of time.

The bill has no chance of passing, but he gets on Twitter and publicly attacks a fellow Republican. Bad form.

SMH, I dont think anybody has thought that thru at all.. spend ten seconds and you would figure out its impossible to seperate without a collapse of the central govt.. thats not gonna happen.

I don't think that is the actual endgame here. It's simply a ballot referendum to gauge voters' level of dissatisfaction with the current state of the federal machine and to send a message in a manner with a stronger basis than a sample poll. There's nothing in the language of the bill to suggest anything more impending than that, although there was clearly some expectation of hand-wringing as an additional objective.

Of course secession by popular electoral will is not treason...never was and never will be.

But it is illuminating to see that people like Jeff in GOP leadership only really get their hair up in opposition (not against the cultural Left or against the increasingly autocratic Federal government) to the people when they start talking about their natural born rights and State sovereignty.

Really highlights what this party leadership really stands for.

I'm afraid that will backfire. I don't see enough ardent dissatisfaction yet to make a good show in votes. Irritation? Yes. But also still a feeling that the system can be turned around.

For the record: I am opposed to the proposal for Texas to secede from the United States of America. I would, however, fully support the rights of any citizens of other states wishing to do so, most especially those in California, Illinois, and New York.

It really highlights what many of the GOP party apparatus has become in the last 10 years - basically full wing-nut.

I'd rather not lose 3 of the top 5 GDP producing states in the union to prove a political point.

No. The problem is that the people that vote for state party leadership are too small and too sufficiently unlike the general voting public to win consistently. So you end up doing things like giving away the US Senate in states like Georgia. The real problem is open primaries. Democrats have fully embraced the strategy of crossing party lines to make sure the wingnuts get the GOP nomination. Then we get 2022.

No! We do not want politicians doing something productive. The less they do, the better off we are.

You say " collapse of the central government" as if that was a bad thing. I believe we are very much at a point where collapse would be preferable to a further leftward move.

ok.. we are nowhere near collapse of the central govt. This isnt the fall of the USSR type situation.

While a very small minority is upset, the large majority isnt.
