I find it amazing that Brittney Griner is called un-American when she exercises her right of free speech, when the real anti-American (Trump) gets a free pass from the ultra-right. The Trump crowd fits all the hallmarks of a cult, and I am a republican too. Sad to see what Trump has done to America.

So, just as a logical exercise....if it's "irrational hatred" to call Griner "un-American" for doing something un-American, then wouldn't it also be irrational hatred to call Trump un-American for doing something un-American?
Your logic is seriously screwed up. Brittney exercised her right of free speech, which is entirely American, whereas Trump actively courted and supported insurrection. Why is that so hard to understand?

Trying to reverse a legitimate election in Wisconsin is the most un-American thing I can imagine.

So when Algore did the same in Florida that was or was not un-American?

Is it un-American to challenge the results of an election? If so, there are a ton of un-American politicians roaming around. Killary evaluated legal action to challenge the 2016 legitimate election but fell short of filing. At what point in the continuum does it go from American to un-American?

Certainly, you can agree that it was un-American of Killary to call a legitimately elected president - illegitimate?
If using free speech is American, can the classification change to un-American based on the words used? If so, who gets to decide? For example, a KKK rally. By your definition - American - just a bunch of whites talking freely. Others see it as un-American due to the subject of the speech.

Certainly you can understand how millions of Americans think it is un-American to bash our country with words and then kneel during the National Anthem.

What Al Gore did was a legitimate use of the courts. That you can't see that is disturbing. KKK rallies and Nazi rallies are protected free speech, see Skokie IL in the 70's. The ACLU defended the Nazi marches.

What Trump did in Wisconsin, is not legitimate, and he might go to prison for it and should.
Bull***** Read the Supreme Court's opinion . . . Algore's actions were unconstitutional. Certainly we agree that something unconstitutional is un-American.

Continuing, so all protected speech is "American" in your opinion?
Please do enlighten me.

Three questions if you are willing:

1) Based on what criteria do you consider yourself to be a Republican?
2) If the answer to 1 is because you have voted that way in the past, for which candidates did you vote Republican and why?
3) When you say Trump is anti-American, would you mind clarifying what things he has done that are anti-American?
1 &2 Voted republican at all leveles from from 1980 till 2008 with the exception of Dem Buddy Skeen. Couldnt vote for Kerry or McCain so I have voted Libertarian presidents and still vote repub in other elections except T. Cruz. voted for Lib instead. Overall I am fiscally conservative so I voted candidates that I believe align the closest to my beliefs.

3. He is a liar, from saying if nominated he would disclose finances like everyone else before him to his bone spurs exemptions while he played collegiate sports and marched in parades. He was a life long dem till he saw how weak the rep. party was.

The meaning of words matters. I asked One-Eyed Wheeler to clarify specifically what things Trump had done that were anti-American. If you are saying being a liar is anti-American, okay, but you would be including nearly every politician in Washington with that criteria. If you wanted to argue that he was a less than moral man, I think most of us would nod in agreement. But that would hardly disqualify him in a head-to-head with Biden or most other politicians.

Let's ask the Devil what he thinks about Mr. Griner's hatred for her free country…

From Screwtape Proposes a Toast: Thoughts on corruption of humans from a senior Demon; CS Lewis:

"Democracy is the word with which you must lead them by the nose. The good work which our philological experts have already done in the corruption of human language makes it unnecessary to warn you that they should never be allowed to give this word a clear and definable meaning. They won't. It will never occur to them that democracy is properly the name of a political system, even a system of voting, and that this has only the most remote and tenuous connection with what you are trying to sell them. Nor of course must they ever be allowed to raise Aristotle's question: whether "democratic behaviour" means the behaviour that democracies like or the behaviour that will preserve a democracy. For if they did, it could hardly fail to occur to them that these need not be the same.

You are to use the word purely as an incantation; if you like, purely for its selling power. It is a name they venerate. And of course it is connected with the political ideal that men should be equally treated. You then make a stealthy transition in their minds from this political ideal to a factual belief that all men are equal. Especially the man you are working on. As a result you can use the word democracy to sanction in his thought the most degrading (and also the least enjoyable) of human feelings. You can get him to practise, not only without shame but with a positive glow of self-approval, conduct which, if undefended by the magic word, would be universally derided. The feeling I mean is of course that which prompts a man to say I'm as good as you."

Pay careful attention to the following:

"Aristotle's question: whether "democratic behaviour" means the behaviour that democracies like or the behaviour that will preserve a democracy."

Griner's expressed hatred toward her country is an example of the former and NOT the latter. Your Trump screed is irrelevant to her type of hatred for her country.

Glad she is home. Glad she is honest and brave enough to admit she has changed her opinion on what America means to her. In this day and age of leftist controlled media that kind of mea culpa can ruin a star's reputation among her followers/fans. Her safe return was an answered prayer.

This thread is a good example of the irrationality and ass-hattery of the US political landscape in general. What a fustercluck. Mainstream media largely abdicated its proper responsibilities to the public as the fourth estate, and instead melded into partisan party politics. Add the two-party primary system, social media, and the resulting effect on group dynamics, and you're left with a cesspool. Be interesting to see how well/long this great country with the momentum of all of its current industry/entrepreneurs/researchers/infrastructure can survive this totally inept federal governance (whichever party has how much influence).
