Mexico suggests it would impose its own tariffs to retaliate against any Trump tariffs
President-elect Donald Trump threatened tariffs against Mexico, Canada and China until "drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens" stop "invading."

MEXICO CITY, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested Tuesday that Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own, after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 25% import duties on Mexican goods if the country doesn't stop the flow of drugs and migrants across the border.

Sheinbaum said she was willing to engage in talks on the issues, but said drugs were a U.S. problem.

"One tariff would be followed by another in response, and so on until we put at risk common businesses," Sheinbaum said, referring to U.S. automakers that have plants on both sides of the border.

She said Tuesday that Mexico had done a lot to stem the flow of migrants, noting "caravans of migrants no longer reach the border." However, Mexico's efforts to fight drugs like the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl which is manufactured by Mexican cartels using chemicals imported from China have weakened in the last year.

Sheinbaum said Mexico suffered from an influx of weapons smuggled in from the United States, and said the flow of drugs "is a problem of public health and consumption in your country's society."

Sheinbaum also criticized U.S. spending on weapons, saying the money should instead be spent regionally to address the problem of migration. "If a percentage of what the United States spends on war were dedicated to peace and development, that would address the underlying causes of migration," she said.

Sheinbaum's bristly response suggests that Trump faces a much different Mexican president than he did in his first term.

Back in late 2018, former President Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador was a charismatic, old-school politician who developed a chummy relationship with Trump. The two were eventually able to strike a bargain in which Mexico helped keep migrants away from the border and received other countries' deported migrants and Trump backed down on the threats.

But Sheinbaum, who took office Oct. 1, is a stern leftist ideologue trained in radical student protest movements, and appears less willing to pacify or mollify Trump.

"We negotiate as equals, there is no subordination here, because we are a great nation," Sheinbaum said, while adding, "I think we are going to reach an agreement."

But Gabriela Siller, director of economic analysis of the financial group Banco Base, fears the personality clash could escalate things into brinkmanship; Trump clearly hates to lose.

"Trump may have just tossed the threat out there, as he does," Siller said. "But Mexico's response, that we're going to respond to you with tariffs, that will make Trump really impose them."

It's not clear how serious Trump's threat is. The U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement forbids just imposing tariffs on other member countries. And it's not clear whether the economy could even tolerate sudden levies on imports: Auto plants on both sides of the border rely on each other for parts and components, and some production lines could screech to a halt.

"It is unacceptable and would cause inflation and job losses in Mexico and the United States," Sheinbaum said, while offering to talk about the issues. "If tariffs go up, who will it hurt? General Motors," she said.

"Dialogue is the best path to achieve understanding, peace and prosperity for our two countries," Sheinbaum said. "I hope our teams can meet soon."

Late Monday, Trump said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, as one of his first executive orders.

The tariffs, if implemented, could dramatically raise prices for American consumers on everything from gas to automobiles to agricultural products. The U.S. is the largest importer of goods in the world, with Mexico, China and Canada its top three suppliers, according to the most recent U.S. Census data.

Trump made the threats Monday in a pair of posts on his Truth Social site in which he railed against an influx of illegal migrants, even though apprehensions at the southern border have been hovering near four-year lows.

"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," he wrote.

He said the new tariffs would remain in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"

"Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power," he went on, "and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!"

Empty words. They are scared. They get devastated by US tarrifs. We get jobs.

What a piece of dirt

The drugs killing our citizens are coming from her country!

Because she and the Mexican political elite let the cartels and drug organizations run wild.

And if we did impose a 25% tariff is would bury her country and probably put half its work force out of a job

[America accounted for 83.3% of Mexican exports]

It's entirely plausible there isn't enough non migrant labor to fill those roles. About 1970 we started pretending trades don't matter and everyone should go to college.

I can tell you I need a finish carpenter to do the trim in my living room and I have been looking for at least 2 months with no luck.
Plausible? It's reality, and these guys are clueless as to it. I used to mock athletes calling their situation "slavery". Now we've got "conservatives" calling people making $25 an hour to work on a roof "slave labor".

The majority of America does not think mass deportation is the best solution, imo, but that it is the only solution that anyone is willing to attempt. It is either Trump's way, or continue as normal.

1. Yes it has been an invasion....pretty unprecedented really. Possible 8-10 million people over our borders in just 4 years. Just 48 months....100k to 200k a month crossing over and settling in our cities and towns.

Wild

2. Yes we know that Congress and lots of Presidents have turned a blind eye....they all like the cheap labor.

3. A majority of Americans...including Latino men....favor mass deportations

Better than arguing about the term "invasion"….just amid you don't care if millions of 3rd world peoples settle in America (or the Western world)

To most patriotic natives who have long opposed that kind of thing it's an invasion

Even if the corrupt political class conspires with the invaders to help them settle in the new land and possibly one day take over

Where was your definition even from? Did you make it up?
Even for you, this is an odd hill to choose to die on. You're very obviously incorrect, yet you persist. At least arguing the logistics of mass deportation gives you ground to stand on when criticizing Trump's plan, albeit not enough to sway most people's opinion on this topic. You bored or inebriated?

There are people like this amongst us believe it or not. They believe they know something. Then are used by the government for vaxxing or supporting mass invasions of people stealing your families resources and culture etc etc

The question is more how to neutralize their ignorance to not hurt the rest of us. Literally everything he she they posted in his her their 3 points in that post was wrong but he she they think he she they is right.

It fits your second definition: 10 million illegals are clearly hurtful to America in many ways. It's not only Laken Riley.

That is arguable. Say there are 40 million. Most contribute to the economy and are not a problem for their neighbors. Are there illegals that are hurtful? Absolutely, but also many more citizens are hurtful. We don't say Detroit has been invaded by hurtful violent criminals though, because it hasn't.

Oooh careful now. Parts of Detroit most certainly have been invaded…but they speak Arabic and not Spanish. There are sections of Detroit where the road signs are in English and Arabic.

Again, I'm ok with invasion being a description, as long as you aren't talking about rolling tanks into the Arabic speaking portion of Detroit and conducting mass deportations. At that point, someone has to point out it isn't that type of invasion.

So I also agree that words have meaning and we need to be careful about how we use them. I don't *think* anyone is talking about tanks. They could be but I don't think I've seen that.

I think most of the conversation has centered around illegals who are also criminals (more than just immigration law criminals). The support for that is very, very high.

The support for deporting all illegal immigrants is high as well, not just the criminals. As it should be.

Deport and make them come in legally with a temp work visa if we want. They should have ID and a background check, they should pay for that processing as well.

Absolutely zero reason for citizens to be forced by the government to accept open borders and/or illegal workers. Such a simple concept. Everyone comes in legally, very simple.

Support for that might be high but it's going to be very expensive and very complex. The public likes lots of ideas that don't work…it's why high speed rail comes up at least every 6 months.
.

Sure I understand but support for deportation is high by Americans, and it's for all illegals. We need to stop hedging on what the people want. Port's allies like to lie about that fact and pretend the majority want illegals to roam free and clear. They don't, Americans want legal immigration only.
Deportation doesn't have to happen overnight, it can and will take years, the costs will be spread out. Immigration fees and tariffs can contribute $ to the effort as needed.

It's not a hill to die on. I don't mind anyone calling it an invasion, until the "invasion" is then used as a reason to deploy the military in our country. At that point, I think it is worth noting that it is not really an invasion. No foreign army is here, just decades of illegal immigration.
Such bull*****

The description doesn't matter to those who have had a child raped by an illegal, had a drunk driving illegal kill their grandfather while he walked along a sidewalk, got robbed by a pair of illegals armed with knives and a glock, or had their sister raped and strangled by an illegal who was flown into their neighborhood by the Biden administration.

With the exception of Waco47 you remain the most clueless poster on this board. Don't know if you have a legitimate university degree or even work a full time job......but you desperately need to spend some time in the real world. Be it in East Saint Louis, Oakland, Oak Cliff or even New Orleans.

I was focusing on the 10-20 million brought in under Biden-Harris but, like most Americans, I'd be willing to consider all illegals. They are all criminals who came here illegally. That's why they are accurately labeled "illegal" aliens.

Not punishing criminals is in itself harmful. That's self-evident made more so by all the cities run into the ground by decades of Democrat leadership. Detroit might be the best example. San Fran, Milwaukee, & others all help to illustrate that failing to punish criminals causes lots of problems. Again, this is obvious to everyone else.

Whether it's defunding the police & refusing to jail offenders to being a sanctuary for illegals, fascist politicians have repeatedly demonstrated that they are ok with some people breaking the law. Taxpayers, productive citizens, property owners, and everyone else become victims.

It's amazing how many people vote for such stupidity and then complain when they experience the results!

Haven't you though? Nobody has done hardly a thing, at the federal level, about the illegals in this country for decades, thats why we are here. You must have voted for many who got nothing accomplished.

And you said "I'm a partner in a local brewery in Dallas , so I think I have a really good feel for this issue." in a discussion about illegals in the industry. How could someone not think that you were hiring criminals to do your dirty work?

And I co-owned a restaurant in... SOUTH TEXAS of all places. I know what happens when you bring in folks without paperwork - and the cartel is behind it. We dealt with the ramifications of firing these folk, when we found documents the documents were forged just to get them hired, with the Juarez Cartel back then. So I do have some experience in this, probably not as much as you as you appeared to, wither you hired them, or at least looked the other way, while others did.

Fess up to the names. You will feel better in the morning.
BTW - My old restaurant in South Texas, although I no longer own it, is still a restaurant, a Tex-Mex one. https://eldoradorestaurant.com/
Because it is non of my business. I stay in my own lane. I don't work for ICE. I just eat at restaurants I like. I don't hire illegals (maybe my housekeeper of 25yr. Never ask the question. She is part of my family and is the hardest working person.

I have no doubts there would be a shortage of certain jobs... such as construction. But what will happen is that wages will start rising more closely in line with inflation. Outsourcing and using illegals has kept American workers' wages down for decades while inflation just keeps on keeping on.

My brother is a database programmer (something along those lines). He has similar issues with a certain work visa and a bunch of Indians. He says he should be paid around 200k, but the company is always hiring guys overseas to do it for 75k.

If all the cheap 'slave' labor pool were to be deported, that would certainly result in demand to fill those roles. The price (wage) for that demand would rise and Americans could go train and get those jobs. Unemployment index drops. Wages blunt inflation.

Misery index defeated. Culture saved.
Just wait to see what AI does to him. $150 AWS machine and a $30 a month license is super inexpensive and works 24/7 without complaints. There's a growing tech labor glut including in India.

Of course it's your business. If you harbor a criminal and remove a hard working legal or US Citizen from a job, it's certainly your business. Why? She may be hard working but if she is indeed illegal, you are breaking the law. You are depriving some law abiding US Citizen of making a living. You are a criminal.

There's an easy solution to the problem that neither party likes because the dirt secret is that they both like cheap labor.

If you punish the people hiring them and there's no work because they can't be hired they stop coming. There's a 0.0% chance that happens though.

I can take you to a couple very large corporate farms in Ohio where we could round up several hundred illegals in less than an hour.
Yea, and not just farms

Meating packing plants in Nebraska and restaurants in DFW and Houston are also hot spots for illegal labor

whom in the heck do you think cooks your food, even at fancy joints. Latinos (mostly not legal). Not saying it is right, just stating the facts.
Where is your documentation on those "facts"? I know a lot of chefs, none of them would hire an illegal to "cook your food".
my documentation is that I have a culinary degree and know people in most kitchens in Dallas from Bar and Grill types to fancy pants. mostly the line cooks are Latino (mostly undocumnnted, except for chain restos. You really only get fully documented apprentices (all colors) in Michelin Stared Restos. They can pay those folks when a table of 4 is $1500 and up. I'm also in the biz. I'm a partner in a local brewery in Dallas , so I think I have a really good feel for this issue.
First of all, we are talking illegals, not fully documented. You said "even at fancy joints", places that have true chefs. I say that it's BS. Just as you just agreed to. Tell me which bar and grills so-called chefs would hire illegal aliens. Please. Let folks know so they know what is going on in the kitchens they frequent so we can avoid them. These illegals have no place in any industry where folks health can be manipulated. You need to report them to ICE immediately. And please make note of your local brewery so everyone can avoid it as you seem to ignore health issues, documented with the undocumented.

Add, that when your brewery fails as you hired criminals to work for pittances, please pledge here and now to hire hard working legal documented and Americans for it. Shame on you for taking advantage of America
firstly , I would never put any particular names on the internet that may or may not hire illegal line cooks. Secondly, you sir are well out of your element here. Secondly, bar and grills to NOT have "chefs" as you said. They have line cooks. (no Michelin/Brigades) in those places, so that tells me what you do not understand how restaurants work. 3rdly, I appreciate your sentiments wishing me to fail.(most profitable one in town, btw) How thoughtful of you, particularly since I only remarked I have interests in said brewery. We DO NOT hire illegals and I never said anything remotely close. 4th, it isn't my job to report anyone when I have no skin in their game. You think the good ladies (usually) singing amazing tacos and the small taco shops are legal? lol.
I do not post anything that I do not understand the subject. Perhaps , you should stick to what you know.

Yes it's interesting how people people will rationalize things, especially if she's illegal. Then they'll usually say…..

Btw what's a good blooded whitey? Sounds racist. Would white people appreciate being called that? Why is the option an illegal (should we assume non white, hispanic woman (what is a woman?)) or a good blooded (insert racist derogatory term here)?

There's an easy solution to the problem that neither party likes because the dirt secret is that they both like cheap labor.

If you punish the people hiring them and there's no work because they can't be hired they stop coming. There's a 0.0% chance that happens though.

I can take you to a couple very large corporate farms in Ohio where we could round up several hundred illegals in less than an hour.

whom in the heck do you think cooks your food, even at fancy joints.

Why would you not list the names of places that hire illegals when I just pointed out the transmittable diseases that many of them carry? If you know them, and folks die or get TB or HIV from it, doesnt that make you, at least morally, complacent?

Of course it's your business. If you harbor a criminal and remove a hard working legal or US Citizen from a job, it's certainly your business. Why? She may be hard working but if she is indeed illegal, you are breaking the law. You are depriving some law abiding US Citizen of making a living. You are a criminal.
and you don't comprehend well. I said I didn't know or not. You let me know if you can find me some good blooded whitey to do that job nearly as well. Aint happening. Never asked the question as she came to work for us when I was 25 and , trust me, it was the norm. She ain't going anywhere. Thanks for name calling "criminal". Get over yourself already. Your boy Trump is the criminal and that is documented and convicted. So, enough of your wholly BS. You live how you see fit and I do the same.
He mad
Of course he is. He's got an illegal maid that he has been shafting for years by paying her a quarter of what she would be making if she were legal. Now he's gonna have to find a legal one that will consent to work for full price!
Yes it's interesting how people people will rationalize things, especially if she's illegal. Then they'll usually say…..

Btw what's a good blooded whitey? Sounds racist. Would white people appreciate being called that? Why is the option an illegal (should we assume non white, hispanic woman (what is a woman?)) or a good blooded (insert racist derogatory term here)
I noticed that. Jr. sounds very racist.

Never heard of a single employer in any sector who didn't know if his employee was an illegal.

Lack of a social security number or one that doesn't check out to the name on the card can be a first clue.

Years ago in El Paso we hired a maid from Juarez to help my wife around the house for a few weeks while she was sick from her 3rd pregnancy in 4 years.

It was immediately obvious the gal was illegal.

Did I mention I pay her for 3 weeks every summer to go holiday. Yeah, been shafting her. She may be legal for all I know, just never asked and 25yrs later, don't care. I'd be willing to be she makes as much or more than you haters annually. It would probably good if 2 two fellas stay in your own lane and not judge something you know nothing about.

In El Paso there was a rampant number of phony social security cards. For 5 bucks any wet could get one.

We could easily determine which were fake.

Not sure why JR is playing this ' in 25 years I have no idea if she is an illegal ' game.

As anyone can easily reach the correct conclusion processing her withholdings.

But to each his own I guess.
