Good stuff. I hope Syria says, 'hey, let's change the narrative and move into the 21st century in peace.'

4000 years of history and the Bible says they wont: Isaac vs Ishmael.

Off the subject…..

But just learned tonight that during the early stages of WW2 Great Britain joined forces with the Soviet Union to invade Iran.

Totally unprovoked and without even a declaration of war .
Deposed the Shah and banished him to an extremely small island where he eventually died.

Why ?

To establish a supply line through Iran for British and US aid to the Soviet Union.

Just another example of Iranian grievances against the West.

History is always in the eyes of the story teller.

That's the Pahlavi family, and the Shah's son is the one the West backed and was deposed by the 1979 Revolution. That's not a grievance held by today's Iranian people or Islamic regime.

Maybe so, maybe not.

However it is another example of the similarities between imperialism and communism.

The weak are bullied by the stronger and justify it afterwards.
As the history books have always been overwhelmingly written by the winners.

Hitler was tight with the Senior Pahlavi. Strange bedfellows for sure. Called them the "ancient Aryans". It was low impact on Iran in the scheme of things. But it started getting interesting when unlike the Western powers, the Soviets refused to depart after the end of the war.

People like to point to the Mossadegh coup as the "blowback" to the U.S., and misguided Soviet fear. They forget that the Soviets literally tried to establish a couple of communist states in Iran via war just a few years before that.

Turkey is now at a dangerous confluence of competing interests. If not careful, they could oddly enough end up with Russia, the U.S., Israel, Iran, and Saudi Arabia all upset with them at the same time.

Do you know any Iranians that had to leave after 1978? I worked for an Iranian company for 4 years in the 90's and a Sargent I worked for at Ft Hood literally had to leave everything. Many of the Engineers were "gotten" out, some have families still in Iran. Interesting conversations. Your view of what the Iranian as a people think of the US is not consistent with what the people that had to leave and still go back to visit family say. The US is not viewed as a villain on the streets. I have had more than one stand in my doorway and say please don't attribute what you see on TV to the Iranian people. They are trapped by religious zealots.

The religious zealots only like other religious zealots that believe what they believe. We see that in the US, in this Board (SBC) l. I think if you dig deeper, you will typically find good reasons for actions taken. May not support your anti-globalism narrative, probably won't, but typically it is more than we just invaded to waste taxpayer money for greed...

True, Great Britain withdrew from Iran after the war against Hitler was won; while the Soviets delayed their withdrawal for several months .

However neither withdrawal justifies their original invasion, occupation and domination of Iran.

An occupation that continued for several years.

Again; just imagine how Americans would feel if Canada invaded the United States to facilitate their war with Mexico.

Occupying whatever parts of the US they felt necessary and disbanding our government and armed forces in the process.

Really think Americans would forgive or forget such a high handed aggression just because the Canadians withdrew after four years ?

Once again, like so many times in modern history, the invasion was initiated by the USSR. Britain was good with the Iranian response and actions. It was Russia that invaded, which forced the Brits to take part as allies. There are some really interesting papers on this through JSTOR. Funny, the US had nothing to do with this as not in the war at the time. I can find no record of US troops taking part of the invasion, only equipment from the lend-lease after it was already done. Am I missing something on that? Was the US supposed to oppose it? Or send troops to protect Iran?

Once again, thanks. Interesting part of history. Good read.
