Beware the law of unintended consequences.
1) the government needs money to operate (see also deficit)
2) the government will get your money one way or the other
3) if no property taxes where will they get the money to make up the lost revenue?
4) if there is no offset to lost revenues we are gonna find out what comes after trillions

Property taxes are necessary unless that revenue stream is replaced with higher sales taxes and / or higher state income taxes.

Otherwise services will have to be drastically reduced or eliminated.

Exactly.

That's especially problematic if you live in Texas or Florida where there are no state income taxes. You're about to pay $1,000/yr for your license plates and 12% sales taxes.

Just start from the assumption that services/spending will never be cut and figure out how to make up the gap.

Probably have to add a national consumption (federal sales) tax on top of state/city sales taxes

There should be a rule that if your family - you and your direct descendants - own and paid tax on a property for over 100 years, you should be exempted from paying tax as long as the land is kept in your family.

It is bull**** that Indians get that privilege but legacy Americans whose families have been here for hundreds of years do not. People lose their family farms bcs they can't keep up with increasing property taxes or estate tax.

Yep, this.

Truth is the banks own our land and buildings. The banks own our politicians.

I've been watching X to see if he brought that up again. Nothing on his page

I suspect Elon will come to his senses and realize that BBB was a huge first step and that this success could lead to more cuts. It's the nature of politics and how the legislative process works. Actually, the passage of this bill was stunning for its speed and the way it played out.
In other words, his maid accidentally put on CNN and he got his BBB information from there?

All economic realities.

Ideally, government at all levels will be scaled down, especially the federal level. But people are so spoiled and lazy expecting the govt to take care of them that they are often incapable of doing things for themselves. If govt does those things, they will have to pay the higher taxes and accept a higher amount of incompetence and corruption. They are g any other choices.

I'd like to see the 17th amendment repealed and a national sales tax replace the income tax. Get rid of the IRS altogether. I don't see ending property taxes as feasible at the state and local level. However, with genuine school choice and no illegals in the school system education should cost less. Private schools do a much better job at a fraction of the cost. Competition should force public schools to improve quality while also lowering costs. It works in the private sector and there is no reason it cannot work with education. Health care too.

Naturally, all this is a poor dream. It won't happen. But we can dream and it's useful to have an idea of an alternative to the mess we have now.

Good question. I don't know what's going on with Elon. He's obviously brilliant with tech and business but I wonder if he understands how the government operates in reality. He can be forgiven somewhat if he doesn't since most people don't. DOGE opened up the eyes of lots of people although it should not have been too surprising. I still have a book from 30 years ago highlighting waste in government.

That's a partial explanation. I think there is more to it. Elon also is a genuine patriot. He genuinely wants DOGE to succeed for the benefit of the entire country.

Wrong. The only thing "not-so-beautiful" is the tired deficit spin that ignores how growth actually works. The bill reduces the deficit over time by driving real GDP higher through energy expansion, capital investment, and tax reform that rewards work, not dependency.

It doesn't explode the deficit. It restructures the economy to produce more, earn more, and tax more without crushing families or businesses. Yes, there's upfront cost, because that's what it takes to reverse stagnation. What's unsustainable is pretending we can tax and regulate our way to prosperity.

This isn't short-term politicking. It's a long-term bet on American productivity. And it beats the hell out of another decade of managed decline.

Just my opinion, but I see several factors here:

* Elon has his companies (and employees) to think about, in addition to his love of country. Trump is more focused on his love of country, along with some interest in his legacy;

* Elon's financial education is built on starting and building tech enterprise, while Trump's came from bank negotiations, acquisition and dealing with media;

* Elon and Trump are both used to being the guy in charge; sharing control is not something either of them likes, but in the end while Trump was very glad to have Elon's help a la DOGE, Trump is the President so in the end it's his call;

* Trump and Elon both love a stage and attention. Neither applies much of a filter to what they say

A guess - once some of the Tesla bombers/scrapers are in jail/prison/executed and the others have been civil suited for $200,000 each, then he will come back into the fold. Tesla is protected and the US of A can go on...

The reply is spot on, cutting spending to tread water may not be the best option. Willing to hope for the best on this bill.

Elon is great when it comes to creativity. But as for dollars and cents, he's always profited off of the government teat. He certainly didn't turn down the green money. He looks like a clown on this issue. But I still like the guy. Amazing innovator, but I don't trust him to lead a 3rd party.

The sad part is his ego is sooo big. He will start a third party that only hurts conservatives, because libs won't vote for common sense, they will vote for whatever nonsense the tv tells them to. So you'll have two parties that both have common sense and some conservative values varying on "stewardship", with the progressive and black vote all going to Dems. It's a losing strategy for middle America. But if I were a betting man, the richest man in the world won't let the little people get in the way of his ego.

Third party is best for local elections, where the rules favor runoffs in close matches.
