And that is exactly what his side has been trying to do for decades. (And often succeeding at)

Control the universities. Control the corporate media. Control Hollywood and peoples entertainment…always push a message. Control tax payer media (NPR). Control government institutions and museums. Try to get talk radio under their control or silenced with "fairness doctrine" stuff. And label any views they don't like "racist, sexiest, homophobic"

It's amazing that Reiner can not see the fascist fat man in the mirror is himself and the Western Left

Reiner is a putz. His dad was great and funny, but I think Reiner is mad that he has never really been funny. If you remember Meathead, he was always the butt of the jokes, not the one who could deliver them

I did not watch the entire speech but did see clips. It was a typical Trump speech: blunt, brash, forceful, not very eloquent, dramatic, mostly honest with some exaggeration, etc. I do not see him as a great orator but few presidents are. Obama wasn't, despite the sycophants who say so. In the past century, only Reagan, JFK, & FDR stand out as examples.

If they didn't know already, now they know they are dealing with a different kind of leader.

Indeed.

Reiner said, "So we're now in a place where we are really wrestling with whether or not we're going to have a constitution, whether or not we're going to have a the American form of democracy and the First Amendment is right at the core of it."
He continued, "This moment that we're in right now, it goes way beyond Jimmy Kimmel. It goes way beyond knocking comedians off the air. This is directly out of the authoritarian playbook. Control the media, do whatever you can to control the media so that only your message is getting out. If you look at authoritarians across the globe that's exactly what they do. So if you want to control Nexstar or Sinclair or Fox News, whatever, and you can all of a sudden consume it all, you know subsume it all, then you have the only platform. You know, they always talk about the presidency as being the bully pulpit. well, if the bully pulpit is you own everything, then it's impossible for people to, to fight back."
Reiner added, "It's a you know, it's more than a slippery slope. This thing is barreling downhill. And we have, I would say a year to be able to correct this and see whether or not our 250 year experiment continues to to to survive. And we'll find out but we need everybody to push back, not just comedians. Everybody needs to push back."

Blue star (for Meathead).

I have no problem saying I am on the Trump Train. If Harris had been elected, hardly any of the stuff we've found would come to life and the American taxpayers would be funding he/she transitions in Sub-Saharan Africa, drag comics in Germany, funding Democrat politicians in America, we would have kept on with the disastrous Biden economic policies plus the liberal media and all the other liberal crap that was happening. I am on the Trump Train until it stops running, 100%

The left wing party has been in control of the media when they started taking over all the unions like the Editors, Casting, Production and so forth since around the 80s sometime. As the globalist push their agenda, they sank into the pit of no return. They thought the faked Russian Collusion would be the end of Trump. Thank God it wasn't. They are becoming absolutely terrified of Twitter and now that TikTok is going into conservatives and there will be free speech there too, they have already figured out that the days of Legacy Media are coming to an end

Agree with that for the most part. He has done a spectacular job on most things. Unfortunately he has ****ed up the economy royally. I don't like the way the timeline is shaping up. Unless he finds a way to end his trade war with the world, the middle and lower classes are about to get bludgeoned come 2026. Just in time for the mid terms!

It took Clinton six months to turn the economy around. It took Reagan about two years. The economy has actually taken a downward turn since Trump took over in January. He has much work to do.

Trump-onomics might not work

But he had to try something

Post-cold war DC policy has enriched a small elite in America and "export manufacturing jobs overseas & import service worker semi-slaves by the millions" has led to a new gilded age situation at home where most millennials can not even afford a home of their own. While a small elite gets ever richer and richer.

"Only 18 million out of 72 million millennials are homeowners". And remember the youngest millennials are now 29 years old. Next year there will be none under 30 years of age.

Most will never own a home at all….ever

Real wages are functionally stagnant. There has been a chronic long problem with college grads finding jobs. 58% of recent college grads don't have jobs…that number used to be 20% in the 1990s.

Marriage rates and birth rates are reaching crisis levels and still dropping in the USA. Millions of young men have just given up on a job and stopped looking at all. The "Not in Work-Not in school" category….such large groups of aimless depressed young males represent big trouble coming.

And of course while the USA practiced free trade and threw open our markets… the rest of the world repaid us by cheating and created various hidden tariffs and protection schemes to protect themselves and take advantage of our businesses and workers.

It's like they still have no idea how Trump got elected

He ran against the post cold war DC consensus (more wars abroad, more immigration at home, more economic globalization, more progressive-social liberalism)

And he won on that message. (TWICE…and came close to a 3rd win)

The immigration and globalization issues are of course both tied to economics.

If Trump makes everything worse, history will not be kind to him. He has gambled with America's future. You can say he had to do something drastic, but there is such thing as too much of a good thing. I sure dont know. Nobody does. What Congress is letting him do has never been attempted, ever.

They have been thoroughly rejected by the American people and they know it.

Congressional approval rating hovers around 13%….and it's been that way for a long time.

The younger generation on the Left are past Bernie and now now Mamdani communists. The young Right thinks mass deportation is the moderate option.

I think Congress is functionally giving up and just letting the "Imperial Presidency" take the wheel and see what happens.

I believe they know they are horribly unpopular, inefficient, divided, have no real long term vision for the USA, a geriatric leadership long past retirement age, and know they are eaten up by lobbyists & special interests.

Trey Gowdy (our own fellow Baylor grad and KOT) gave up on the place and just went home. And his star was on the rise in Congress. He still walked

[Trey Gowdy is done with politics.

The House Oversight Committee Chairman for years has joked privately about quitting Congress and returning home to South Carolina. On Wednesday, he finally pulled the plug likely for good.
A rising star that many Republicans once considered a dark-horse for speaker of the House, Gowdy announced Wednesday he would not seek reelection or any political office and would instead return to the justice system.

Gowdy will become the eighth current chairman to depart Congress]

Trump is taking us much closer to Socialism than I ever imagined. Not as disappointed in Trump as much as I am with so-called conservatives that have no problem with this.

Yes. The government owning parts of private companies is a hard pass that needs to be a line in the sand moment for republicans. I'm not a socialist.

It's bad enough when the government picks winners and losers (like EVs). It's utterly ridiculous that some republicans have their heads so firmly in their asses on this topic.

If Bernie Sanders said this the meltdown on this board would be epic.

Nice to know you have me in the same camp with Rob Reiner.

You're not in the Western Left, are you?

Actually, I am one of an almost extinct group called the Objective Right. When our leadership succeeds we give credit where credit is due. When they **** up and make bad decisions, we push back and call them out.

Way too many posters here that truly believe Trump walks on water and can do no wrong. I won't mention any names. LOL!

Naturally no president is perfect.

However I would be curious which 3 presidents in your lifetime had a bigger mess to clean up and did a better job of doing it within his first year.

Agree with that for the most part. He has done a spectacular job on most things. Unfortunately he has ****ed up the economy royally.

Marriage rates and birth rates and reaching crisis levels and still dropping in the USA. Millions of young men have just given up on a job and stopped looking at all. The Not in Work-Not in school category….such large groups of aimless depressed young males represent big trouble coming.

And of course while the USA practiced free trade and threw open our markets… the rest of the world repaid us by cheating and created various hidden tariffs and protection schemes to protect themselves and take advantage of our businesses and workers.

When stats are combined like this you have to examine them separately to see where the failure really lies. It seems like a damning stat about home ownership but it's entirely plausible that it's a damning stat about marriage. Could also be that the age was picked arbitrarily. No way to know without the actual data.

When picking a mate became about swiping left or swiping right and we stopped trying to meet people marriage was going to have issues.

When we allowed a war on men (a bear or a man) to blossom into this group of women that just hate men and blame them for everything marriage was going to have issues.

When the LQBT movement became extremely mainstream marriage was in trouble.

When we attacked traditional family values and having children marriage was in trouble.

You also have to factor COVID which left about a 5 year gap where meeting a mate would have been incredibly difficult since you really couldn't go do that for about 3 years.

If you're not partnering up (or doing so much later) then you're not getting married. If you're not getting married you're probably not working on starting a family. If you're not starting a family you don't really need a home. My guess is this graph tells probably 5 smaller stories and really housing is a result of those stories and not the other way around.

Would be interesting to note what 2007 looked like.

Excellent data.

Unfortunately most folks will ignore it and the obvious conclusion.

Far easier just to ***** about Trump.

Let me dumb this down a little bit. The United States of America has 340 million citizens out of 8 billion people in the world.

We are easily the largest consumer in the world, and have just 4 1/4 percent of the world's population. For a variety of reasons, we cannot produce everything we consume. Can you imagine starting a business in Trump's anti business economy? Trump is saying you can ONLY buy American made products for your business. If you buy from foreign sources to support your business, he is going to tax you a minimum of 15 percent. When your new business seeks out U.S. suppliers, you pay much higher prices because the government has helped the U.S. suppliers eliminate any foreign competition.

I am all for the U.S. and love my country. I am also for free enterprise and the freedom to buy products from whoever I want to buy from. I am for free trade. Americans benefit and the whole world benefits. Trump's isolationist and protectionist trade policies actually make companies lazy and stifles innovation and efficiency. Mostly, it just raises prices. If Trump does bring back the bazillion factory jobs that he is promising, WHO is going to fill those jobs?
Call it a tax, the people are outraged! Call it a tariff, the people get out their checkbooks and wave their American flags!!!

Oh I actually think we can.

Or at least Canada, the USA, Mexico together as a trading bloc could.

(Not that we should....it would drive up costs and be unncessary)

But I think you underestimate how blessed the USA is....and how with Canada and Mexico a North American trade union would be essentially a real life autarky

Combined we would be near 500 million people and some of the most productive farm land on earth. The USA alone produces enough food calories by agriculture to potentially feed the world's population.

Because right now they have been cheating on trade with us as well.

I understand the general dislike for Trump policy.

But what is the alternative? Go back to the status quo?

Keep opening our borders and markets to world trade....while we let other countries (like China) cheat on trade and under cut our business and labor?

Something has to change. If Trump current policy is not the answer then we need another answer.

Right now its "Trump sucks" followed by a general feeling/statement that to go back to what we have been doing before. A previous economic policy that is helping China become a manufacturing & military super power...while exposing American workers and businesses to predatory trade practices by other nations.
