I got an officer buddy in the navy, he mentioned a couple months ago that they were ramping up production for the ship building

This is an idiotic decision. We need to fight tomorrow's war not yesterdays.

I think they're prepping for a potential conflict with China over Taiwan.

No doubt.

However regardless of the quality of our Navy...the American people will not fight and possibly die for a country on the other side of the world.

Just suppose there was a terrorist incident where the PRC appeared to have planned and organized it.

Last I checked, all ICBMs are supersonic.

Fair enough - what is the new missile it has ... maybe it is hypersonic. Regardless, not sure an other big carrier makes sense.

Few things are as ironic as an American saying 'never forget'.

depends on what it does besides the obvious.

Carriers are force projection, which drones/missiles cannot accomplish.

It's also important that new carriers do more than the older classes.

Anyway, a new carrier makes more sense than, say, the F-35 or DEI.

I'm definitely not an expert, but afraid China takes out all our carriers in a couple of days with those hypersonic missiles or massive drone attacks. Hope I'm wrong.

Would this be like the time recession was redefined during Oatmeal Brain's administration? I am old enough to remember that.

Geez, recession is two quarters of no growth or contraction of GDP. That is the definition that has been used for generations in political analysis. The redefining is stupid.

No kidding.

I can't go into the details, but China is not in a place to 'take out' our carriers unless our officers all get really stupid at the same time.

Also, China has some really important reasons not to get into a serious war with the US. Not that we want any major war ourselves. The power dynamics are weird in that they strongly favor the big nation that can stay out of a war the other major powers get into.

It's easy to get into a big war. Really really hard to end one, even if you are stronger and ready for it.

I certainly hope you're correct. The Pentagon seems to disagree: https://interestingengineering.com/military/how-china-would-use-its-hypersonic-arsenal

Greenland is a part of Denmark - a friendly ally of ours - and we have had an airbase in Greenland for over 60 years.

The Pentagon sees everything as a threat, in order to justify never-ending budget increases.

Carriers are hopelessly obsolete.

Easy to detect, a floating mega explosion loaded with jet fuel and bombs.

Multi billion dollar target for cheap drones and missiles.

And each CV is manned by approx 5000 sailors.

Unfortunately we are still fighting and planning for WW2 sea battles.

Even with the recent example of the Russians losing several warships in their Black Sea fleet to Ukranian drones.

Serious question, if you don't use carriers what would you use for force projection over a period of weeks in an area, say of a thousand square miles?
