I'm no Trump guy but it's probably neither of their faults. This is a result of COVID purchases. It's the same result you get from a 50 year mortgage.

Car retails for $30,000. Dealer tacks on a $15,000 market adjustment. 7-8 year note to make the payments the same as they would have been at $30,000. 5 years into loan you are WAY underwater. Like you still owe 40-50% LTV and the book value is well below that. Car needs major repairs and you were already stretched on the budget because rather than buy the base model you needed massage seats. Just let the bank come take it.

It's also why insurance "totals" are way up. Lots of cars randomly finding the bottom of the lake or being "stolen".

I'm all for personal responsibility but this is most likely the fault of dealers and banks that wrote TERRIBLE loans. When you're writing a loan at 115-125% LTV you have to know this is a likely outcome.
