But in the end the Average American does not care about the S&P, Dow, etc. They care about the prices they are paying. Not if their retirement account is doing well or if the rich (heavy investors in the stock market) are doing well.

That is how most Americans view the Dow when prices are up. That the rich are getting richer but the average person is spending more of their paycheck just to get basic items.
