No doubt the GOP has their fair share of crooks too. But I've never seen any reason to believe their graft is nearly as extensive and widespread. Either way, the corruption of Congress is an advertisement for term limits and the senators remind us dee Ashly that the 17th amendment was a huge mistake. It needs to be repealed along with the 16th.

Personally, I think every federal bureaucracy needs to be audited. Then audit every employee starting with each member of Congress, past and present. Same for all the upper echelons of every agency. I expect massive amounts of fraud would be uncovered and many of them would earn long prison terms.

I believe there was a group like this proposed and even shortly convened without necessary power or approval to exist for more than a statutorily limited time and no clear guidelines as to what was to be examined or cut. If I recall they made a lot of headlines for a while with outrageous claims of abuse and fraud, many of which fell apart upon further scrutiny.

They made a few changes but overall did not save the federal government any material amounts and it is unclear whether their recommendations or actions carry any actual weight or legality.

Almost like there needs to be an actual act of congress to corral the budget. Somehow we keep coming back to congress needs to do their jobs and people who want changes need to stop sending the same 95% back every 2 years.

I largely blame campaign finance laws. Modern campaign spending can be tied directly back to the first campaign finance laws in the 60s and 70s. Not that there wasn't plenty of questionable dark money involved, but the shameless appeals and outright pandering largely tie back to those laws that made asking for money non-taboo because it was "legal" and led directly to the current PAC and finance structure we see today.

If ads were ignored and voters turned to public records to see who the candidates are for elections, a lot of that spending would be worthless.

In addition and almost impossible to address - if news outlets did their job, then non-profit research and public records would not have to be found by every citizen to discover what candidates' records and backgrounds were.
